Zhao Han had only just slept until six-thirty after going back to bed when Wu Shanshan woke her with a phone call, asking her to accompany her back to the dormitory to move her luggage.
"Accompany you? You're treating me like a human tool again..."
She was displeased, but it was only natural for a junior to serve a senior.
Besides, she still had not figured out why Narration Mister had said that the other girl had saved her once. Had it meant the previous car accident, when Wang Qingyue had tried to run her over? So she quickly got herself ready, put on a smile, and went to wait for her in the hall.
Wu Shanshan emerged from the guest room on the west side of the hall. Facing the early morning sunlight, she stretched lightly, looking like someone who had stepped out of a painting.
She was tall and slender, with long legs, exquisite makeup, slender brows, and eyelashes that seemed to be beaded with dew. Her narrow eyes instead lent her an extraordinary air.
What a pity.
Zhao Han thought to herself as she stepped forward and greeted her. "Senior, when are we leaving?"
"Once breakfast is ready and we let Brother Li know, we'll head back." Wu Shanshan seemed much friendlier toward her now, speaking naturally.
The two then went to the kitchen to make breakfast, but as soon as they approached, they saw Wenren De bustling about inside.
"Uncle, please take a rest. We'll handle it," Zhao Han quickly said.
"No, as long as he's home, I have to cook." Wenren De flipped the scrambled eggs in the pan, his tone carrying a hint of helplessness.
"Why?" Zhao Han asked instinctively. Teacher Wenren clearly could eat anything and was not picky about food.
"Because I can't beat him..." Wenren De muttered softly as he cooked.
"Huh?" Zhao Han could hardly believe her ears. Could a son really beat his father?
Wu Shanshan shot her a glare. "Uncle is joking with you."
"Mm, it's a joke. Haha, maybe I drank too much yesterday." Wenren De brushed it off.
The two could only assist him, arranging the bowls and chopsticks and setting out the dishes.
Before long, a delicious breakfast was ready.
After breakfast with the others, Wu Shanshan and Zhao Han excused themselves for the time being and walked out of the villa side by side.
"How are we getting to the dormitory?" Zhao Han looked around. The only car in the courtyard was the blue-black sedan Brother Li usually drove. "I thought you drove here, Senior."
"No. I was with Wenren all day yesterday, so my car is parked at the dormitory lot." Wu Shanshan walked out through the courtyard gate. "We'll take the bus back. It's inconvenient to get a taxi here."
"Then why not ask Brother Li to give us a ride?" Zhao Han hurried after her.
"Oh, he's usually exhausted. Today is his day off, so we shouldn't disturb him anymore," Wu Shanshan said as if it were only natural.
So this girl knew how to care about others too...
Zhao Han thought to herself.
She was naturally familiar with the bus stop. This was a Villa District situated among the hills; after leaving the district and walking less than a kilometer, there was a bus stop nearby.
She had often taken the bus to the Club before, since she did not want too many people to know about her relationship with Uncle.
Both of them walked quickly, and soon followed the sidewalk out of the Villa District.
"Uncle Wenren's relationship with Teacher Wenren seems a little strange?" Zhao Han asked.
"Brother Li should have told you some things?" Wu Shanshan asked in return.
"Mm, he mentioned some. Uncle apparently deliberately let himself waste away because of the Otherworldly User quota, so he could give the protected quota to Aunt," Zhao Han said.
"That's right. That's where it started. Actually, Wenren plays the role of the father at home. You probably haven't seen a picture of his grandfather. If you had, you would find that Wenren looks exactly like his grandfather. Whenever Uncle gets drunk, he treats him as his grandfather..." Wu Shanshan gazed into the distance, her eyes unfocused.
"Oh, I understand. Teacher is really pitiful. Every time he is forced to play his own grandfather and discipline Uncle Wenren, he must be in terrible pain. Only with tremendous resolve could he bring himself to do it..." Zhao Han nodded repeatedly, instantly picturing a classic anime scene in her head.
To keep his father from falling into complete ruin, the son had no choice but to cast aside all propriety and raise a great palm of love and justice to discipline his own father.
Since the father could not beat the son, he had no choice but to stop drinking and act like a normal person for a few days, giving his body a chance to rest and recover.
What a painfully profound realization...
Upon hearing this, Wu Shanshan suddenly looked at her strangely.
"Did I say something wrong again?" Zhao Han asked cautiously.
"Uh, I can't say for sure." Wu Shanshan shook her head. "It's just that from what I've seen, every time Wenren plays the role of his grandfather, he seems to feel some inexplicable, utterly baffling sense of pleasure. Of course, that must be my illusion. Your interpretation is the right one."
Zhao Han immediately breathed a sigh of relief. At least she had not embarrassed herself this time.
She continued, "Wenren is someone who respects his elders very much. He respects his mother and President Zhao, and even Inspector Liu. Although Inspector Liu is very respectful toward him, he actually respects Inspector Liu even more, and calls him Brother Liu in private. He once told me that we cannot forget who laid the foundation for our comfortable lives just because we are living comfortably now. Those who forget the past will inevitably be punished by it."
Zhao Han nodded again and again. The image of Wenren Sheng in her mind was becoming more and more like that of a true teacher.
As they talked, they arrived at the bus stop.
There was already a young man standing at the platform, around twenty-five or twenty-six years old. He looked somewhat mature for his age. When he saw the two women approach, he merely glanced at them before continuing to look in the direction from which the bus would come.
Zhao Han did not pay him any mind. Security nearby was quite good. There was not only a Patrol Division outpost, but also patrol points run by ordinary organizations.
Wu Shanshan, however, looked at him several more times.
Not long after, the bus arrived, and the three of them boarded one after another.
The bus was fairly empty. The two women sat side by side in a double seat near the back, while the young man took a single seat near the front.
After the bus had been traveling for a while, Wu Shanshan was chatting with Zhao Han when she glanced at the young man again and suddenly said, "Since you helped out so readily today, I'll teach you something."
Upon hearing that, Zhao Han said happily, "Thank you, Senior."
"Mm, then I'll teach you how to judge people." Wu Shanshan smiled mysteriously.
"Okay, okay." Zhao Han pulled a notebook from her jacket pocket.
"No need to write it down. Just listen." Wu Shanshan lowered her voice. "Do you see that Uncle who got on the bus with us?"
"I don't." Zhao Han blinked hard and shook her head. The person who had boarded with them was clearly just a young man in his twenties.
"I'm talking about that person." Wu Shanshan tapped her on the head again. "Although he is dressed neatly, his bearing is plain, he lacks confidence, and his face bears the marks of hardship. That is the standard look of an Uncle."
"Oh, so that's how it is." Zhao Han suddenly understood.
"Also, look at the sorrow in his eyes. Sometimes he looks out the window as though contemplating life; sometimes he half-closes his eyes and leans against the seatback, wanting a brief rest. What conclusion can you draw from that?" Wu Shanshan continued.
"Mm." Zhao Han thought seriously. After a while, she said with absolute certainty, "Based on the behavioral pattern research, psychological profiling, and over ten years of social experience I've studied recently—this person's phone must be dead!"
Wu Shanshan nearly burst out laughing, but managed to hold it in.
She rebuked her, "His phone being dead may indeed be true, but what I want to tell you is that he should be a temporary worker in the Villa District, and he has an unusual purpose."
"Ah..." Zhao Han let out a soft cry. The other girl had seen so much at a glance, while she had noticed nothing at all.
Right, Shuang-jie had said before that Wu Shanshan had already spent a year training at the Club. After summer vacation, she would be a senior, and after graduating, she would officially join the Club.
It seemed the abilities granted by the Mysterious Realm truly were extraordinary.
"Shanshan-jie, you're amazing." She lowered her voice and sincerely asked for guidance. "How did you figure all that out?"
"The way a person looks at a stranger and the way they look at someone they know are completely different." Wu Shanshan lowered her voice as well. "And the way he looked at you was the way one looks at an acquaintance. I have all the records for the Villa District, but I have never seen this person. That means he could only have come to the Villa District within the last few days. Yet in only a few days, he remembered you so clearly. Could he be an ordinary temporary worker?"
"Whew..." Zhao Han was instantly filled with admiration. This was a real-life master detective!
Ordinary People who had not been trained could never distinguish the subtle differences in someone's gaze. But with the special physique of an Otherworldly User, coupled with specialized training, such inconceivable things could be done.
At that moment, she truly could not wait to delve deeper into this field and achieve something within it.
Compared to the world of Ordinary People, this place was full of danger, but it was far more interesting and filled with all kinds of possibilities she had only imagined.
Now she somewhat understood why Brother Li had refuted her dismissive view of Otherworldly Users, and why so many people were willing to pay such a huge price for them.
