Meiko looked Xu Fan up and down, her eyes filled with shock.

Xu Fan looked to be only twelve or thirteen, about the same age as Itachi Uchiha.

And Itachi Uchiha's record was nothing short of extraordinary.

At four, he had taken part in the Third Shinobi World War and returned without a scratch.

At six, he enrolled in the Ninja Academy and graduated after only one year.

At eight, he awakened the Sharingan.

At ten, he was promoted to chunin and became the first ninja in Konoha to take and pass the Chunin Exams alone.

At eleven, he already possessed the strength to join the Anbu.

Yet even a genius ninja like Itachi Uchiha had not been promoted to captain as soon as he joined the Anbu.

Meanwhile, this completely ordinary-looking guy standing before her had been promoted to captain the moment he arrived.

Most importantly, their squad was not leaderless. They already had an outstanding captain like Kakashi.

The Anbu operatives, however, could not accept this reality. They gathered around Kakashi, wanting an explanation.

"Is Captain Kakashi leaving the Anbu?" Meiko, who admired Kakashi, could not help asking.

Though the thought made her deeply reluctant, there had been precedents of Anbu ninja leaving to become Jonin Leaders.

"Not exactly." Kakashi shook his head without offering much explanation, then quickly caught up with Xu Fan.

The remaining Anbu operatives looked at one another, all feeling that something about this was unusual.

"Even if Captain Kakashi really is leaving the Anbu to become a Jonin Leader, Tenzō is in our squad."

"But Tenzō was originally a member of Root. Could that be related?"

"What about Itachi? His ninja record is incredibly impressive."

"And I don't think Captain Kakashi has any intention of leaving the Anbu."

Xu Fan's sudden descent into the squad had undoubtedly dealt these Anbu operatives quite a blow and made them resent him.

Kakashi, Tenzō, and Itachi Uchiha—any one of them was a genius ninja capable of standing on his own.

Yet now all three of them were being made to obey Xu Fan alone.

The Anbu, short for the Assassination Tactics Special Squad, were the equivalent of a special forces branch in the world of Naruto.

Under normal circumstances, they operated in squads of four or five, with the Anbu Captain relaying and carrying out orders.

However, due to various circumstances, both Tenzō and Itachi Uchiha had joined midway through.

With Xu Fan added to the mix, this squad had now grown to eight members.

"But Itachi Uchiha should still be under evaluation at this point."

Xu Fan noticed the late-arriving Itachi Uchiha. When Itachi noticed him, a flicker of surprise passed through his eyes.

"If I remember correctly, Itachi Uchiha joined the Anbu at eleven. Not long after that, he witnessed Shisui's suicide."

"Then, after some time, the Third Hokage promoted him to Anbu Captain. For Sasuke and Konoha's peace, he personally wiped out the Uchiha Clan, then left the village on the Third Hokage's orders and joined the Akatsuki Organization."

Xu Fan thought to himself, feeling that Itachi Uchiha would not remain on this team much longer.

Of course, that was all in the future. What Xu Fan needed to do now was make these people understand who he was.

"It's him..."

Tenzō frowned slightly as he looked at Xu Fan standing beside Senior Kakashi, his heart filled with surprise.

Did the Third Hokage arrange for him to enter the Anbu? Tenzō murmured inwardly.

Though he had only met Xu Fan once, Xu Fan had left a deep impression on him.

Aside from himself, Xu Fan was the only ninja in Konoha who could use Wood Release.

And unlike himself, Xu Fan was the true heir of the First Hokage.

"Hello, everyone."

Just as Tenzō's thoughts ran wild, Xu Fan cleared his throat and began introducing himself.

"My name is Xu Fan. Starting today, I'll be your captain."

"Captain?"

The moment those words were spoken, the expressions of Itachi Uchiha and Tenzō both became rather subtle.

What is this guy trying to do? Itachi stared directly at Xu Fan, feeling that he could not see through the man at all.

Not long ago, Xu Fan had gone to the forest near Naka Shrine, displayed his strength before him, and left behind a strange plan.
