Background / History
Heir of Fluorite Castle
Roland is Baron Roman and Madam Meryl's eldest son and is six years older than his younger brother, Russell. From childhood, he was regarded as the successor to Baron Gloomlight, Fluorite Castle, and the Guangguang River Valley. 1 47
After coming of age, Roland served in the Dragon Blood Knights alongside the future Grand Duke Kunsitan. This service established a personal connection between them and reinforced Roland's political ambitions at Red Castle. 47 He later served as Assistant Keeper of the Seal under Kunsitan and assisted Baron Roman with ministerial work. 213 269
Although already a Great Knight, Roland postponed contracting a Phantom Beast for years while attempting to gain the Clay Dragon Ross's recognition. He saw becoming a Dragon Knight as both a personal goal and the means to restore the Fluorite Mushroom Family's former glory. 47 71
Setbacks and Reassessment
Roland's confidence was damaged by his affair with Madam Kelly, the widow of a deceased nobleman. He was detained after Kelly's son Carpenter accused him of rape and disrespecting his late father; Count Merlin defused the conflict by extending Pine Forest Manor's succession period. 167 Madam Meryl later condemned Roland's indulgence, vindictiveness, and fearfulness in handling the affair. 168
His greatest setback came when Baron Roman, rather than Roland, formed a contract with Lord Ross. Roland broke down after losing the Wyvern he had pursued since childhood, particularly as Russell was also nearing Dragon-riding status. 282 283 After venting his frustration, he accepted that he had to begin again, resolve to contract a Phantom Beast, and improve through his own effort. 283
Roland chose the Nightmare Ghost Horse Nemo as his Phantom Beast and eventually became a Phantom Beast Knight. 282 299 304
Marriage to Gewen
Roland's planned marriage to Gewen Baimai Gen was initially opposed by her father, Baron Gevidas. Gevidas considered Roland's scandalous reputation and favored Dreller, a more promising prospective Wyvern Knight. 307 Roland and Gewen nevertheless affirmed their feelings, and Roland remained determined to marry her. 307 328
When Russell's arrival as a Wyvern Knight shifted the balance of power, Gevidas relented and allowed Gewen to decide for herself; she accepted Roland's proposal. 332 334 At their wedding, Roland defeated Dreller in a duel using the Three Sword Style Great Move taught by Russell, defending both his marriage and his personal dignity. 354
Industrial Administrator and Dragon Rider
Following Russell's rise, Roland increasingly focused on administration, territory development, and the Fluorite Mushroom Family's expanding holdings. He helped manage the Glimmering Market, Blackfire Land, Thunder Marsh, and related land-reclamation projects. 400 425 514
After Russell became Grand Duke, Roland became Minister of Industry. Working with Charles, he organized factories and infrastructure for the Shadowflame industrialization program, including the production and deployment of Thunder Sound Machines. 572 578 He later rode a Nickel-Silver Dragon and became a Wyvern Knight in his own right. 609
Appearance
Roland is repeatedly described as having an ordinary appearance, especially beside Russell's notably handsome looks. Formal clothing can make his features appear more vivid, but he does not share Russell's natural visual presence. 47 305
- Ordinary facial features and appearance. 47
- Often presents himself in refined noble attire for court, negotiations, and social events. 151 305
- His contracted Nightmare Ghost Horse and later Nickel-Silver Dragon enhance his knightly presence. 304 609
Personality
Roland is ambitious, sociable, and highly conscious of noble status. He eagerly pursued a place at court, sought Lord Ross's recognition, and initially expected to lead the Fluorite Mushroom Family into a higher rank. 47 71 211 He is comfortable in aristocratic society and enjoys banquets, dancing, and maintaining connections with nobles. 151
His early confidence often concealed jealousy and insecurity. Russell's rapid growth repeatedly destabilized him, particularly after Roland lost his chance to ride Lord Ross and discovered that Russell had surpassed him in both cultivation and combat. 257 271 283 305 His affair with Madam Kelly also exposed poor judgment and an unwillingness to face consequences directly. 167 168
Over time, Roland becomes more mature and pragmatic. He accepts Russell's superiority in combat, asks him to teach the Three Sword Style, and redirects his strengths toward governance and industry. 284 325 425 Though he continues to struggle with comparisons to Russell, Gewen helps him recognize his own worth as an administrator, humorist, and family figure. 532
