The Shadowflame Dragon was born from a volcano when rising magma granted it sentience. It remembers neither a dragon-egg stage nor any memories before its birth; after awakening, it sought a Knight of its own. 407 458

Its power radiates from Shadowflame Volcano across the surrounding land, creating warm territory where life can survive. This radiation is not deliberately directed; it expands spontaneously, while the Dragon’s broader purpose is to open warm lands and leave humanity to build civilization. 93 373

By the time Russell first sees it, the Shadowflame Dragon is a legendary protector of the Shadowflame Grand Duchy, though it has been badly weakened by prior wars. During the battle against Snow Giant Da, it suffers devastating injuries, including broken limbs and ruined wings, after losing its previous Knight. 244 246

Russell’s rise changes its circumstances. The Dragon protects Russell and Snowflake’s secret, rewards Russell with the egg that becomes Black Oil Dragon Rosai, and gradually accepts that Russell’s growth offers it a path beyond its earlier defeats. 251 372 482

The Shadowflame Dragon is a mountain-sized, lizard-shaped Dragon with a long neck and tail, powerful four-limbed build, and a body that radiates volcanic heat. Its presence combines physical menace with the awe produced by overwhelming Dragon’s Might. 238 239
