In the darkness, Valantis's archers were even less of a match for Sinterland's elven marksmen. Their racial gifts allowed the elves to see night as clearly as day, and they could still pick off the guards on the walls with precise shots.

By contrast, the guards on the walls could only fire blindly into the pitch-black land below. Their already mediocre accuracy had fallen to rock bottom, and they caused the Terra army barely any casualties.

Knowing they could never match the elves' vision at night, the commander defending the city immediately ordered the soldiers to hang torches from the battlements. Otherwise, the defenders would not even know where the enemy had set up their ladders.

Yet one unit of soldiers still climbed onto the walls without the defenders noticing. They wore pitch-black robes and black headwraps, while even their shields and weapons had been painted black. The ladders they carried were the same. Under cover of night, the enemy had failed to spot them before the torches were lit.

But time was short, and Terra did not have enough time to make more black paint. Thus, there were only a few such units, but they were enough. They successfully opened up a foothold on the walls for the Terra army, securing a sizable section for their forces to climb up.

A tense tug-of-war began. The two armies constantly fought for position on the walls, but Terra was determined this time. Having decided to settle the outcome tonight, they did not retreat as they had before when they failed to take the city quickly. Instead, they kept climbing the walls and charging desperately toward the gate mechanisms.
