The cavalry returned to their ranks, the remaining enemy troops had been cleared out, and the siege engines were nearly ready. The Terra army was about to launch its first probing assault on the city.

No matter how urgently he wanted to defeat Valantis's forces, Ronan would not personally take part in this first assault. In fact, the vanguard consisted solely of those mercenaries.

War mercenaries earned a great deal, but theirs was also the hardest money to make among mercenaries. After all, no country hired them to live in comfort. To reduce the losses of their own forces, they would inevitably send these mercenaries charging at the front.

That was why war mercenaries were replaced so quickly. In this world, mercenary groups that had lasted more than ten years without disbanding while still retaining considerable strength could be counted on one hand.
