Background

Mewtwo was created by Team Rocket as an artificial lifeform and weapon. During its early existence, it experienced dreams involving a girl called Mewtwo 2, then awakened to learn its own origins. It destroyed New Island, was deceived by Giovanni into wearing power-suppressing armor, and later broke free after realizing it had only been treated as a tool. Its confrontation with Mew and later experiences at Clear Pond and Mirror Lake led it to recognize itself as an individual life rather than Mew's clone or Team Rocket's weapon. 1141

After the Clear Pond incident, Mewtwo erased Team Rocket's memories concerning it and lived alongside the Pokémon it had cloned. It discovered that its clones lacked Life Energy, leaving them with short lifespans and preventing unevolved clones from evolving. Mewtwo dedicated itself to finding a treatment that would allow them to integrate naturally into the world. 367 372

Appearance

Mewtwo is a silver-white humanoid Pokémon combining human and feline traits. It has purple eyes, three segmented fingers resembling paw pads, a long purple abdominal tail, and an external nerve bundle extending from the back of its neck. 370

  • Base form — Silver-white body, purple eyes, purple tail, and a composed but imposing presence. 370
  • Mega Mewtwo X — Taller, more robust, and built with explosive muscle strengthened by Mental Energy; its eyes turn blue, and it manifests Aura alongside its Psychic power. 1141
  • Mega Mewtwo Y — A smaller, more compact Mega form that contains an exceptionally dense amount of Psychic-type power. 1216
  • Cloak — Often wears a flax-colored cloak while operating discreetly in Ultra Space. 997 1216

Personality

Mewtwo is stern, proud, highly independent, and intensely distrustful of humans who treat Pokémon as possessions or weapons. It is especially hostile toward Team Rocket because of its own creation and exploitation, and it despises Goh's use of modified Poké Balls to control Pokémon. 1094 1095

Despite its cold manner, Mewtwo is deeply responsible toward the cloned Pokémon it created. It refuses to sacrifice Su Hao's well-being for their treatment, builds a secure home for clones and adopted Pokémon, and later agrees to act as Mew's guardian. 374 1208 1312

Mewtwo is competitive and somewhat stubborn around powerful Legendary Pokémon, regarding Calyrex as a rival and refusing assistance it believes it can manage itself. Its ultimate personal goal remains becoming the strongest. 1141 1158

  • Was taught to Metagross, which adapted it into a version suited to itself. 1209
  • In Mega Mewtwo Y form, creates a compressed Mental Power field capable of destroying Dark Mewtwo's black psychic chains. 1547

Mega Mewtwo X

Mewtwo's first completed Mega form combines Psychic power with Fighting-type strength and Aura.

  • Can fight effectively even if anti-Psychic technology suppresses its Mental Energy. 1141 1142
  • Synchronizes its Aura with Su Hao to form exceptionally powerful Wave Power and Aura Bullet attacks. 1184 1547

  • Rapidly recovers from severe damage with Psychic power during combat. 1547

Genetic Engineering and Medical Research

Mewtwo is an accomplished scientist whose expertise comes from both its creation and independent research.

  • Created numerous cloned Pokémon, then identified their lack of Life Energy as the cause of their short lifespans and evolutionary defects. 372
  • Repairs damaged genetic fragments and develops treatment plans for genetic illness, including Eevee's genetic collapse. 372
  • Helped Leafeon overcome a genetic illness. 1092
  • Implanted the Destruction Gene into Metang, judging its powerful brain compatible with the gene's enhanced Mental Power. 380
  • Later refuses to perform cloning again because of the consequences of its past work. 1272

Technology and Engineering

  • Modifies hidden realms to conceal energy signatures from Team Rocket detection. 1092

Cero Island and Mega Evolution Research

After healing the cloned Pokémon, Mewtwo relocates them from Kanto to Cero Island to hide them from Team Rocket. Team Rocket Counterattack

Mewtwo remains cautious about confronting Team Rocket until it is confident in its Mega Evolution and physical strength. Once it acts, it destroys Team Rocket's suppression machinery and directly challenges Giovanni's attempts to control it again. 1096 1142 1151

Trivia

  • Mewtwo's first Mega Evolution was deliberately delayed until Su Hao returned, because it wanted its friends to witness it. 1141
  • It chose Mega Mewtwo X before Y because Team Rocket possesses technology designed to suppress its Psychic power. 1141 1142
  • Mewtwo views Cero Island not merely as a hiding place, but as its final responsibility to the generation of clones it created. 1208
  • It is not the same individual as Dark Mewtwo or Armored Mewtwo, which originate from an alternate timeline and serve Giovanni. 1546 1563
