| First Appearance | Chapter 112 |
Background / History
Misaka is already Tokiwadai’s celebrated Level 5 esper when Kurotama enrolls. Her ability evaluation requires a swimming pool to absorb the impact of her electromagnetic shots; one recorded test lists an initial projectile velocity of approximately 1,030 meters per second and eight rounds per minute. 112
Despite her status, Misaka does not judge others by ability level. When Saten Ruiko introduces herself as a Level 0, Misaka responds warmly and later reassures her that level is not what matters. The narration also notes that Misaka herself rose gradually from lower levels. 114 122
Kurotama’s arrival introduces Misaka to another Level 5 and gradually draws her into increasingly dangerous incidents involving Imaginary Hand, Ability Crystallization, and Academy City’s research facilities. Misaka repeatedly chooses to protect civilians and children even when doing so limits her options in combat. 115 121 137
Appearance
Misaka is a Tokiwadai student with short hair and a notably cute yet commanding presence. During operations against the facilities connected to the Absolute Ability User plan, she wears a black outfit with her hair tied up and a hat. 115 147
- Usually wears the Tokiwadai school uniform. 112 116
- Carries Gekota merchandise and is easily embarrassed when her interest in it is noticed. 114 115
- Owns a rare pink Gekota finger puppet. 154
Personality
Misaka is direct, proud of her strength, and quick to act when people are endangered. She is irritated by Shirai Kuroko’s possessive behavior, but remains deeply concerned for Kuroko’s safety and regularly works with her. 114 121 137
Her compassion extends beyond her close friends. She treats Saten as an equal despite Saten’s lack of powers, worries about injured children during the Chaotic Opening incident, and is devastated by the revelation that the Misaka Sisters are being killed for the Absolute Ability User plan. 114 137 145
She can be visibly embarrassed by affection or compliments, particularly from Kurotama, and tends to deny or deflect her own feelings. 114 117 167
Abilities & Skills
Electromaster
Misaka manipulates electricity and related electromagnetic phenomena as a Level 5 esper. Her ability is considerably broader than her signature Railgun attack. 115
- Generates powerful electrical discharges against opponents. 121 131
- Controls metal through electromagnetism, including moving debris, steel bars, and large iron plates. 145 148
- Can use electricity to disrupt or destroy machinery, including ability-suppression equipment and hostile mecha. 132 139
- Her power is versatile enough to include telepathic applications. 115
Railgun
Misaka accelerates metal projectiles electromagnetically, most commonly coins, into destructive high-speed shots.
- Her recorded projectile speed is approximately 1,030 meters per second. 112
- She can launch objects other than coins when necessary, as demonstrated during the battle against Christina’s mecha. 139
- A nearby Railgun blast can create powerful shockwaves and gouge the road. 115
- Accelerator’s Vector Control initially reflects her attacks without harm to him. 145
- Mugino Shizuri’s Atomic Buster can interfere with Misaka’s electricity, forcing Misaka to rely on movement and tactics. 149
Defensive Electromagnetism
Misaka uses her control over metal and electricity defensively as well as offensively.
- Prevented falling debris from crushing herself and Kurotama after an explosion. 148
- Blocked Frenda’s explosions with magnetically controlled iron plates. 148
- Destroyed incoming explosive cans before they could threaten her team. 124
- Concerned herself with limiting collateral damage during high-output battles. 121
Memory Absorption
During the confrontation with Kiyama Harumi, Misaka absorbs Kiyama’s memories and learns the motivations behind Imaginary Hand. 124
Relationships
- Kurotama — Initially meets her as Tokiwadai’s newly identified Level 5. Their mutual respect develops into close friendship, repeated combat partnership, and romantic tension. 113 117 147
- Shirai Kuroko — Close companion and frequent partner in Academy City incidents. Misaka is frustrated by Kuroko’s possessiveness but remains protective of her. 114 121 137
- Saten Ruiko — Friend whom Misaka treats without prejudice despite Ruiko being Level 0. 114 122
- Uiharu Kazari — Friend and investigation ally through Judgement-related incidents. 114 122
- Misaka Sisters — Her clones; learning of their use in the Absolute Ability User plan causes Misaka intense distress and drives her to stop the experiments. 144 145
- Accelerator — Opponent in the Absolute Ability User plan. Misaka confronts him to protect Misaka No. 9982, but cannot initially overcome his reflection. 145
- Shokuhou Misaki — A fellow Level 5 who confesses that she likes Misaka; Misaka rejects her and resists Mental Out. 130
- X — Learns from X that all of her sisters, including those previously killed, have been saved through time manipulation; Misaka responds with an emotional embrace. 156
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival of Kurotama
Misaka’s Level 5 evaluation is witnessed by Kurotama shortly before Kurotama receives the same classification. She becomes intrigued by Kurotama’s unfamiliar “Avatar” ability, while Kuroko immediately regards the newcomer as a romantic rival. 112 113 117
Imaginary Hand Incident
Misaka investigates cases tied to Imaginary Hand with Kuroko and Kurotama. She fights alongside Kurotama against ability users, confronts Kiyama Harumi, and works to contain the Fantasy Beast despite its regeneration and ability to grow after being attacked. 121 124 125
Chaotic Opening and Ability Crystallization
Misaka learns that Kihara Gensei’s experiments on children and Ability Crystallization are connected to the threat of Chaotic Opening. She confronts Christina Kihara Leiflein, but Christina escapes by using Ability Down and threatening the children. 136 137
Misaka later cooperates with Kurotama and Judgement Branch 177 during the pursuit of Christina’s forces. She destroys hostile vehicles and provides the decisive attack against Christina’s mecha after Kurotama exposes an opening. 138 139
Absolute Ability User Plan
After encountering one of her sisters, Misaka infiltrates Academy City’s databases and discovers that 20,000 Misaka Sisters are scheduled to die in experiments intended to evolve Accelerator to Level 6. 144
She attempts to save Misaka No. 9982 personally, attacking Accelerator with iron sand, steel bars, and a Railgun shot. His Vector Control renders all of her attacks ineffective, but Kurotama and other avatars intervene before the experiment can proceed normally. 145 146
Following Accelerator’s defeat, Misaka and Kurotama raid and destroy research facilities linked to the plan. Misaka no longer has to pursue the crisis alone and relies on Kurotama’s strength and intuition. 147
Rescue of the Misaka Sisters
Misaka eventually learns from X that the Misaka Sisters—including those who had already died—were brought safely to the present through time manipulation. Overwhelmed by relief and gratitude, she embraces X and cries. 156
