Background
Yu Guo’s defining obsession was his missing fiancée, A Lian, a dance teacher at Tiannan Academy of Drama. Though the academy’s Root Ghost erased A Lian from ordinary memory and records, Yu Guo retained his memories of her and repeatedly risked himself to investigate the academy. Before joining Tianhai, he had lived off rental income after university; A Lian had originally been his tenant. 237 474 927 956
Later events indicate that Yu Guo had already participated in the academy’s 2014 mission. Ji Li reconstructed that Yu Guo had been the guide for the E-2 Special Path and the owner of its mirror Sin Item, but his memories of that experience had been sealed. 1035 1051
His attachment to A Lian kept him moving forward, but it also distorted his judgment. Yu Guo himself eventually questioned whether he was truly searching for A Lian or merely clinging to her memory so that he could endure Tianhai’s horrors. 542
Personality
Yu Guo is sociable, high-spirited, and unrestrained by formality. He jokes with colleagues, involves himself in their daily lives, and turns the Seventh Branch from a grim transit point into a place with games, outings, and gatherings. His philosophy is simple: surviving should include finding happiness. 62 834 908
He is also remarkably bold under pressure. Yu Guo can make high-risk judgments while terrified, improvise around supernatural rules, and place himself in danger to protect others. Li Guanqi particularly admired his combination of courage and meticulousness after Yu Guo correctly identified a false Meng Po. 272 534
However, Yu Guo is deeply contradictory. He has saved comrades, taught newcomers, and volunteered to face ghosts, yet he has also remained silent during others’ deaths and considered sacrificing fellow staff to survive. His fear of death and obsession with A Lian can override his usual warmth. 242 293
Abilities & Skills
Improvisation and Deduction
Yu Guo excels at noticing practical details and exploiting flaws in supernatural situations.
- Identified that moonlight periodically weakened the wall trapping him in a well. 107
- Saw through a layered illusion and bet that Meng Po’s attack was false, neutralizing the threat. 272
- Exploited a barrier’s forced spatial swap to get behind a headless ghost and reach the painting sustaining the barrier. 534
- Determined that an indestructible barrier painting could be defiled rather than destroyed, breaking it by throwing a shoe at it. 534
- Noticed inconsistencies in Hei An’an’s appearance and inferred that her presentation did not match her reported circumstances. 474
Combat and Resolve
Yu Guo is not among the Seventh Branch’s strongest fighters, but he is willing to act decisively.
- Injured the Raincoat Man’s right eye with a sharp blade. 18
- Killed Du Xiyue with a revolver when he judged her to be an immediate threat. 293
- Attempted to use Tong Guan’s Umbrella Sin Item to hold back a Ghost Tide alone, intending to die so Tong Guan and Fang Shenyan could escape. 242
- Endured the Ghost Child’s life-draining attack long enough to activate a chain of Script prophecies. 485 486
Sin Item Management
Yu Guo became one of the Seventh Branch’s most heavily equipped staff members. His collection compensated for his lesser combat ability and gave him healing, defensive, predictive, and temporal options. 542 981
- He understands that Sin Items often fail against certain ghosts but can still be used indirectly by targeting people or circumstances instead. 486
- He willingly lends or entrusts powerful items to allies when he believes they need them more. 555
- His items carry severe physical costs, including lost vitality, permanent pain, injury, and the risk of becoming ghost-like. 485 541 924
Equipment / Sin Items
- Script — A blank notebook that makes written prophecies come true. Its normal use has an eight-hour cooldown; forcing three prophecies at once can cost the user’s life and leave them half-human, half-ghost and unable to think for two hours. 485
- Wooden Comb — Heals injuries by drawing on the user’s vitality. Yu Guo used it to restore Tong Guan’s mental state during the Winter Solstice crisis. 272 924
- Cartilage — Acquired after Zhan Xun’s death; it fused with Yu Guo’s bones and caused ongoing pain. It can parasitize its user and resist supernatural attacks, though it was later devoured by a black-hole-like ghost phenomenon. 541 682
- Space Map — Given to Yu Guo by Ji Li; a Sin Item capable of weakening ghosts. 542
- White Candle — A four-section temporal Sin Item. Each section can return its user briefly to a chosen point in the past to perform one action. Yu Guo expended one section during the Tiannan Academy mission. 934 1035 1036
- Lotus Seed — One of Yu Guo’s later Sin Items; its specific effect is not documented in the available account. 934 1035
- Calendar — One of Yu Guo’s later Sin Items; its specific effect is not documented in the available account. 934 1035
- E-2 Mirror — His former 2014 Sin Item and the medium for the E-2 Special Path between Ghost-Free Academy and Haunted Academy. 1035
Relationships
- A Lian — His missing fiancée and lifelong obsession. A dance teacher at Tiannan Academy of Drama, she was erased from ordinary memory, but Yu Guo continued to remember and search for her. 237 474 927 956
- Ji Li — Trusted friend and the person Yu Guo relied on most in crises. Yu Guo’s death devastated Ji Li, who later described him as his only friend. 542 957 1049 1055
- Hong Fu — Yu Guo’s closest friend in the Seventh Branch. They gambled, argued, drank together, and jointly opened the Winter Solstice Gathering with a comedic Latin dance. 390 923 927
- Tong Guan — Fellow Seventh Branch staff member and frequent mission partner. Yu Guo tried to protect him during the Ghost Tide and later spent his own vitality to heal Tong Guan’s trauma. 242 924
- Fang Shenyan — A blunt mentor-like comrade who repeatedly restrained Yu Guo’s impulsiveness. Fang Shenyan stopped Yu Guo’s attempted self-sacrifice against the Ghost Tide and later confronted him over his moral instability. 242 457 542
- Zhan Xun — Teammate who saved Yu Guo three times during the Hei An’an mission. Zhan Xun’s sacrifice and the Cartilage he left behind profoundly changed Yu Guo. 536 541 542
- Li Guanqi — Respected Yu Guo’s judgment after their bet against the false Meng Po and gave him the Wooden Comb Sin Item. 272
- Qi Jingwu — Roommate during the Tiannan Academy mission. Yu Guo woke him when the mirror appeared, and both were drawn into Haunted Academy. 956 1035
