Mechanics
Bankai is the second stage of Zanpakutō release. It represents the complete fusion of a Soul Reaper and their Zanpakutō spirit, while Shikai is only a partial fusion. Its standard increase in spiritual pressure is stated as five to ten times, compared with Shikai's three- to fivefold increase. 130 487
| Release | Soul–Zanpakutō Fusion | Stated Spiritual-Pressure Increase |
|---|---|---|
| Shikai | Partial fusion | Three to five times 130 487 |
| Bankai | Complete fusion | Five to ten times 130 487 |
Attainment
To train for Bankai, a Soul Reaper must materialize their Zanpakutō and force it to submit. Those who have achieved Captain-level mastery of the four Soul Reaper arts—Zanjutsu, Hakuda, Hohō, and Kidō—are described as having little difficulty completing this training. 66
A Zanpakutō must be properly nurtured through Blade Zen before Bankai training. Ailin compares premature Bankai training to forcibly ripening an immature “second primordial spirit,” making it a burden on the user. 152
- Demonstrating Bankai is the fastest means of passing the captaincy examination. 150
- A Bankai considered excessively dangerous must be demonstrated in the Dangai rather than the Seireitei. 150
- Possessing Bankai does not automatically make a user equally formidable; a captain with an ordinary Bankai may still rank among the weakest Captain-level fighters. 109
Combat Value
Bankai amplifies both spiritual pressure and the power of the user's Zanpakutō ability. For fighters trained across all four Soul Reaper arts, the added spiritual pressure can also dramatically strengthen their Kidō, swordsmanship, movement, and hand-to-hand combat. 66
However, Bankai is not an automatic victory condition.
- A Zanpakutō manifested without its wielder's spiritual pressure is substantially weaker than a complete Captain-level combatant. 38 316
- A Soul Reaper with sufficiently advanced mastery of the four arts can defeat a Zanpakutō in Bankai using only Shikai. 38
- Large gaps in spiritual pressure can weaken or nullify otherwise powerful Bankai abilities. 227
Documented Bankai Abilities
| Bankai | User | Ability / Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Blade Works | Ailin | An Inner World filled with Zanpakutō that allows Ailin to create and control swords. After releasing it, he can use other Zanpakutō abilities at one-tenth of their usual spiritual-pressure cost. 63 70 |
| Demon Blade: Thousand Blades | Ailin | Splits into one thousand blade fragments under mental control; its Bankai form can manifest as an enormous blade hundreds of meters long. 70 |
| Great Crimson Ice Ring | Toshiro Hitsugaya | Activates Hyōrinmaru's Sky Phenomenon Descent, allowing control over airborne moisture within range and its condensation into ice and snow. 304 |
| Enma Korogi | Kaname Tōsen | Creates a black barrier that deprives everyone except Tōsen of sight, hearing, smell, and Reikaku, leaving only touch. 383 |
| Gyakushū Hōgōsai | Hirako Shinji | Distorts perceptions so enemies identify allies as foes. It does not distinguish allies from enemies and is ineffective against a lone opponent. 390 |
| Wind Death Binding Rope | Shūhei Hisagi | Links the spiritual pressure of Hisagi and his target, equalizing them; both repeatedly heal or revive through shared spiritual pressure until it is exhausted. 239 329 |
| Remnant Flame Blade | Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto | Produces heat stated to reach fifteen million degrees, comparable to the sun's core; prolonged use can endanger all of Soul Society. 227 319 |
| Black Rope Heavenly Condemnation Myriad King | Sajin Komamura | Summons a roughly hundred-meter armored warrior whose movements synchronize with Komamura's own. 501 |
| Yellow Emperor's Imperial Palace | Chōjirō Sasakibe | Controls celestial phenomena by gathering thunderclouds and commanding their lightning. 488 |
| Shitenkō Shichijū Wakun | Ailin | Produces seven transparent barriers, each with defensive power comparable to a fully incanted Bakudō #81, Dankū; each shattered barrier further disrupts spirit particles and weakens the incoming attack. 415 |
| Gagaku Kairō | Kuryūshiki Kenpachi | The strongest biological-type Zanpakutō; its Bankai can destroy an entire city the size of Karakura Town. 474 |
Restrictions and Drawbacks
Collateral Damage
Bankai releases within the Seireitei are heavily restricted due to their danger to nearby Soul Reapers. A Captain releasing full spiritual pressure can affect Vice-Captains within three li; two Captain-level combatants using Bankai can place all but other Captains within five li in mortal danger. 23
Captain-Commander Yamamoto avoids maintaining his Bankai in the Seireitei because its heat can burn Soul Society to ash if sustained. 319
Ability-Specific Limits
| Bankai | Limitation |
|---|---|
| Dragon-Patterned Kidōmaru | Requires time to “warm up” before reaching its greatest power. 201 |
| Great Crimson Ice Ring | Toshiro must endure until the four ice flowers behind him shatter before fully releasing its power. 201 |
| Gyakushū Hōgōsai | Cannot distinguish friend from foe and requires multiple targets to be useful. 390 |
| Wind Death Binding Rope | Ends only when released by Hisagi or when both linked combatants exhaust their spiritual pressure. 239 |
| Gagaku Kairō | Originally enters six months of dormancy after one Bankai use, preventing even Shikai; Ailin reduces this period to one month. 474 |
| Souya Jōshirō's Bankai | Prevents him from training his body while active, greatly reducing his physical strength. 472 |
Quincy Bankai Theft
The Wandenreich developed Schrifts specifically to steal Bankai and convert them into Quincy weapons. Driske Berche uses Altar of Usurpation to take Chōjirō Sasakibe's Bankai, while Lille Barro steals and deploys Sajin Komamura's Bankai through Ran-Sō Gōi. 486 502
Losing Bankai causes a major drop in spiritual pressure. Komamura is left severely weakened after his Bankai is taken, and injuries sustained by his Bankai erupt across his own body. 502
- Captains are instructed to avoid using Bankai until a countermeasure is developed. 488
- Soul Reapers can pressure Bankai-stealing Quincy by releasing Bankai sequentially: if one is stolen, another user can attack the thief with a stronger release. 503
- Renji Abarai regains his stolen Bankai after fusing with a black pill containing Hollow power. 509
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Encounters and Training
Bankai is first identified when Ailin encounters a Captain-level Soul Reaper whose released Zanpakutō emits overwhelming spiritual pressure. 4
Ailin later uses his Bankai, Unlimited Blade Works, to train Byakuya Kuchiki for three months. The training dramatically raises Byakuya's strength, allowing him to enter the Sixth Division with power comparable to Vice-Captain Ginjiro and become its Third Seat. 63 87
Ailin's training emphasizes that Bankai is only one part of combat. During a lesson, he uses the Bankai of Demon Blade: Thousand Blades against Byakuya despite matching Byakuya's spiritual pressure, teaching him to gather information on an opponent rather than assume equal spiritual pressure means equal danger. 70
Quincy Invasion
Bankai becomes a central vulnerability during the Wandenreich invasion. The Quincy steal Chōjirō Sasakibe's Bankai, then later take Yamamoto's Remnant Flame Blade and use it against the Seireitei. 486 501
Yamamoto continues fighting after losing his Bankai through two-handed swordsmanship, demonstrating that mastery of the Soul Reaper arts can partially compensate for the loss of a Zanpakutō's strongest release. 501 503
Trivia
- Ginjo Kūgo calls his Hollowfied transformation “Bankai: Second Stage,” but Ailin identifies it as Hollowfication rather than a genuine second Bankai. 159
- Ailin's Unlimited Blade Works is itself his Bankai, so activating Bankai on another Zanpakutō within it does not repeatedly multiply his spiritual pressure. 70
- Central 46 specifically forbade Kuryūshiki Kenpachi from using Bankai inside the Seireitei. 472
