Geography and Appearance
Seireitei covers 133,000 square Rei Ri, with an approximate radius of 365 Rei Ri. An ordinary Shinigami requires roughly forty days to travel around it on foot. 202
It is a clean, highly developed city of white structures and magnificent mansions, with occasional red glazed tiles. Its architecture sharply contrasts with the Rukon District, where souls generally live in low wooden homes. 202
- Surrounded by a five-meter-high white wall with four exits. 202
- The walls are made from Killer Stone, which blocks and decomposes spiritual energy; Rukon residents without spiritual power cannot approach them. 202
- The Killer Stone walls generate the Soul-Masking Film, concealing Seireitei even from Hollows in Hueco Mundo. 284
- The four gates between Seireitei and the Rukon District are:
- Byakudōmon
- Seiryūmon
- Shubamon
- Kokuryōmon 284
Society and Governance
For over a million years, Seireitei's nobles and the Gotei 13 shared authority, though the noble families retained exceptional privilege and influence. The Gotei 13 was established by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto after he seized military control from the nobles, intending to protect Seireitei and the Soul King. 241 356
The city’s prosperity is sustained alongside the poverty of the surrounding Rukon District. Ordinary souls generally lack Reiatsu and can be weakened to death by long-term exposure to powerful spiritual pressure, making Seireitei unsuitable for most Rukon residents. 45 202
Following the killing of much of Seireitei’s nobility, the hereditary noble order nearly collapsed. The Gotei 13 assumed temporary responsibility for maintaining order until a new governing council could be formed. 321
Noble Reforms
After the noble purge, the surviving families agreed that only a clan’s head and designated heir would retain the title and privileges of “noble”; other family members would hold the same status as ordinary Seireitei residents. 360
Security and Infrastructure
- Gotei 13 — Its divisions are distributed across Seireitei and normally handle separate responsibilities. 109
- Central 46 and Mugen Jigoku — Central 46 maintains an underground prison, with Mugen Jigoku at its deepest level. 177 179
- Senkaimon — Registered gates allow travel between Seireitei and the Human World; noble families may also maintain private Senkaimon. 46 284
- Restricted Reiatsu seals — Vice-Captains and higher-ranked Shinigami are normally sealed when entering the Human World so their Reiatsu does not oppress human souls. 46
- Pure Realm Chapters — Destructive failsafes buried beneath laboratories to erase dangerous experiments if containment fails. Their detonation has previously destroyed one-tenth of Seireitei. 341
Major Incidents
Ryoka Invasion
Ichigo Kurosaki and five companions breached Seireitei by launching themselves through the Soul-Canceling Membrane. Captain-Commander Yamamoto declared a state of war readiness and ordered lethal force against resisting intruders. 284
Despite the invasion, neither the Ryoka nor the Gotei 13 suffered fatalities. The Ryoka deliberately avoided killing Shinigami, and many Shinigami responded with the same restraint. 324
Noble Upheaval
During the unrest surrounding the Ryoka incident, commoner Shinigami killed more than half of Seireitei’s nobles in revenge for long-standing oppression. 324
The destruction of the noble order left the Gotei 13 as Seireitei’s temporary governing authority. 321
Reikaku Rebellion
Inaba Kagerōza exploited the absence of many Captains and Vice-Captains by delaying their return through the Dangai. He deployed Reikaku replicas made from the Reiatsu of Gotei 13 Captains, Vice-Captains, and powerful Seat Officers, ordering them to kill their originals and seize Seireitei. 391
The rebellion was quickly suppressed, though the clashes caused substantial damage to the city. 417 472
Quincy War
During the Quincy conflict, Urahara Kisuke supplied Hollow power pills to Seireitei’s Captains, Vice-Captains, and Seat Officers, allowing them to reclaim Bankai that the Quincy could otherwise steal. 509
After Yamamoto’s sacrifice, Shunsui Kyōraku became temporary Captain-Commander and organized Seireitei’s continuing defense against Yhwach. 519
