Nature

A spirit becomes a Hollow when the Soul Chain on its chest is completely consumed and turns into a Hollow hole. Freed from the Soul Chain, it is driven by an emptiness that compels it to devour human souls and seek higher evolution 93.

Hollows originate in Hueco Mundo, a gray, barren realm where lower-ranked specimens commonly appear with white masks and black or gray bodies in widely varying forms 100. Hollows that retain self-awareness can pursue further evolution; those that become ordinary Gillians without consciousness are left with only the instinct to feed 100 196.

A Hollow’s hole represents the emptiness in its heart. This is used to distinguish true Hollows from beings that merely wield Hollow power, such as White Hollow Zangetsu, who lacks both a Hollow shell and a Hollow hole 364.

Appearance

Lower-class Hollows commonly possess white masks, dark bodies, and bestial or otherwise irregular forms. Their appearance becomes increasingly humanoid as their rank rises; Vastolordes are near-human in shape, while Arrancar possess human bodies with only remnants of their masks remaining 100 209 210.

Soul Devouring and Evolution

Hollows consume souls to satisfy their emptiness and increase their strength.

• Devouring sufficient souls advances a Hollow from small Hollow to medium Hollow and then to Gillian-class Menos 196 380.
• Conscious Gillians may devour other Gillians to become Adjuchas, then continue toward Vastolorde 380.
• An Adjuchas that stops evolving risks losing its power and memories before regressing into a mindless Gillian 196 380.
• Vastolordes are exempt from this regression, even if their power is reduced by other circumstances 380.

Spiritual Pressure

Hollows are spiritual entities whose Reiatsu can affect the physical world once it reaches sufficient strength.

Aizen Sōsuke’s experiments caused white bone-like matter to emerge from wounded Soul Reapers, form masks, and transform their Reiatsu into violent, bloodthirsty Hollow spiritual pressure 140. Early subjects generally lost their reason and attacked according to instinct 140 169.

• Hollowfied Soul Reapers can gain enhanced Steel Skin and regenerative abilities 140.
• Hollowfication can grant access to Cero 146 251.
• Urahara Kisuke stabilized Hirako Shinji and the other victims with the Hōgyoku, allowing them to use both Shinigami and Hollow powers, though he could not fully cure them 146.
