The short, dangerous ambush was over. The enemy had not been wiped out, but had chosen to retreat once they realized they had lost the advantage of surprise. Hao Ren returned to the mercenaries and happened to see Nolan jumping down from the weapons platform atop the truck. The girl, who looked barely into her teens, still wore a blank expression, as though what had just happened had been nothing more than an illusion. She showed not the slightest panic or anger.
"Shiton has betrayed us and joined the Rangers," Nolan explained evenly to her team what had happened in the truck. "It was my failure to notice."
Hao Ren remembered how she had fired back from atop the truck with the rotary machine gun while exposed to the gunfire all around her. That had practically amounted to throwing herself into a hail of bullets. The tactic had been brave, but even more reckless. As an outsider, however, he was in no position to judge, so he could only nod with an awkward chuckle. "You looked pretty impressive back there."
Ulanov muttered, "The boss never cares whether she lives or dies once a fight starts, but she always makes it to the end. That's the Gray Fox's luck."
Nolan shook her head. "There have been unlucky times too. You just don't remember them... Forget it. You—are you really a civilian?"
Naturally, that last question was directed at Hao Ren. The moment she finished speaking, the other mercenaries nearby also turned their puzzled gazes toward him. Hao Ren had not used any superhuman strength just now, but for a civilian to take out several firing positions barehanded under the noses of professional soldiers was already so unreal it seemed straight out of a movie with special effects. Ulanov nodded at Nolan.
