Background

Obito was one of Namikaze Minato's three disciples alongside Kakashi and Rin Nohara. Within the team, he was the Uchiha “dead last,” while Kakashi was the prodigy; nevertheless, Obito's connection to both teammates was central to him. He was especially infatuated with Rin, becoming visibly flustered whenever she treated him warmly. 45 61

During Kirigakure's attack on Konoha, Obito witnessed Kakashi suffer a fatal-looking wound and saw Rin abducted. Refusing to abandon either teammate, he awakened a Three-Tomoe Sharingan and pursued Rin alone. Although his new strength rose to Chūnin level, he was badly injured and could not save her without Uchiha Aoi and Inuzuka Bon's intervention. 94 95

After the Third Mizukage took him away, Obito awoke in an underground cavern with Uchiha Madara, who claimed to have saved him. Believing Kakashi and Rin dead, Obito accepted Madara's teachings and rapidly developed his Kamui, Izanagi, Yin-Yang Release knowledge, and familiarity with Black and White Zetsu. Aoi's earlier observation that White Zetsu had regenerated the Mizukage's severed hand eventually made Obito suspect Madara's involvement in the entire tragedy. 98

Obito covertly turned against Madara and attempted an ambush. The attempt failed: White Zetsu drained his chakra, tore out his left Kamui Sharingan, and delivered it to Madara. Obito escaped into the Kamui Dimension with a replacement Three-Tomoe eye, recognized that his arrogance had cost him a decisive advantage, and chose to pursue Madara's target, Nagato, rather than return directly to Konoha. 108

Personality

Obito begins as cheerful, impulsive, and insecure about being the weakest member of his team. He is deeply attached to his comrades, particularly Rin, and his refusal to abandon Kakashi's body or give up on rescuing Rin directly triggers his Sharingan's evolution. 61 94

The losses he believes he suffered make him susceptible to Madara's teachings on war and the Infinite Tsukuyomi. However, he matures while under Madara's control: rather than openly confronting the mastermind after connecting him to White Zetsu, he conceals his suspicions and continues learning. 98
