Shadows Beneath Glory
Konoha had been founded for over fifty-four years. The Uchiha, Hyuga, Sarutobi, Ino-Shika-Cho... many shinobi clans with secret techniques remained active within the village, preserving their legacies and pride. Only the Senju clan was spoken of as though Tsunade, wandering beyond the village, was its sole remaining member.
The Senju had not been exterminated. Under the will of the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, they had chosen to dissolve themselves.
Toka Senju still remembered that moonless night. The air had been so heavy it seemed blood could be wrung from it. Candlelight cast enormous, wavering shadows behind the two men, making the entire Japanese-style room resemble a haunted realm.
Hashirama sat in the seat of honor. His usual gentle, tolerant presence had vanished without a trace, leaving only a suffocating silence.
The scent of unwashed gunpowder and dust seemed to still cling to him. Deeper still was an exhaustion and sorrow that seemed to seep from the depths of his soul, so dense it could not be dispelled. Toka knew what it was—just recently, he had personally ended Apocalypse, Madara Uchiha, the friend and foe who had been entwined with him for half his life.
That battle had not only ended Madara Uchiha; it seemed to have drained a portion of Hashirama's life force as well. Tobirama stood at his side, his silver-white hair bearing the cold sheen of iron beneath the dim yellow light. His red eyes were sharp as blades as they swept over every Senju elder present, including Toka herself. The night wind slipped through the crack in the door, making the candle flames struggle and dance. Light and shadow swayed, just like the unease in everyone's hearts.
"After my brother, I will take over as Hokage." Senju Tobirama's voice shattered the dead silence, as calm as ever. "Madara is dead. There is no other choice. But the danger remains."
His gaze passed over the room before settling on Hashirama, carrying a trace of barely perceptible concern. Then he turned back to the others, his tone growing sterner. "If Konoha continues to have Senju clan members serving as Hokage while maintaining such a large clan, how is it fundamentally different from the old 'Senju shinobi clan' in the eyes of the other shinobi clans? They will only believe Konoha is 'the Senju's village'! That suspicion will wrap around Konoha's foundations like poisonous vines, making the other clans lose the motivation to strive for a shared future."
The candle flame suddenly sputtered, casting shifting light and shadow across Hashirama's profile.
He slowly raised his head. Those eyes, once vibrant as a forest, now looked as if they had endured a devastating wildfire, leaving behind nothing but ashes and bottomless exhaustion.
When he spoke, his voice was hoarse and low, every word seeming to carry the pain of unhealed wounds. "Tobirama is... right."
His gaze was unfocused, as though it passed through the walls and saw Madara's final look as he fell. "I killed Madara... for the village. When ideals clash, no matter how deep the bond or how great the strength, in the end, they lead only to... destruction."
His voice was filled with the immense agony of personally strangling his dearest friend, yet that pain had tempered a resolve unlike any he had known before.
"We built this village." Hashirama's gaze finally focused as it swept over everyone present. "We did it to end the endless slaughter between shinobi clans, to ensure children would no longer struggle through mountains of corpses and seas of blood as we did! This village must transcend clan and surname. It must be a place that carries everyone's dreams, a village that truly belongs to 'everyone'! This is the... best path I could find."
He took a deep breath, and his voice became resolute. "For the purity of this village, so it will not be regarded as the Senju's private property, to eliminate the root of suspicion and allow every shinobi clan to truly see this place as home rather than somewhere they merely reside..."
Hashirama Senju's gaze fell upon Toka. "For the village, friends, brothers, even... my own flesh and blood—so long as they threaten the village's future... they can all be abandoned."
An indescribable torrent of shock, desolation, and bone-deep chill swept over Toka in an instant. As Hashirama spoke, something like a tangible tide slowly spread from him. It was not an attack, but a silent declaration of absolute power and absolute will.
Toka could clearly feel that before this power, any single person present—even all of them together—would be like ants trying to shake a mountain. Before any thought of resistance could arise, it was crushed by that invisible might and by the iron-cold resolve in his words, forged at the cost of killing his dearest friend.
Lord Hashirama... was serious this time. He had decided that the Shinobi Village Era was the path of the future, and for it, he was willing to pay any price, including the glory of the Senju name.
"Therefore, we have decided to disband the clan." Tobirama continued at the right moment. "This generation may retain the surname, but the next generation..."
"Including my brother's children and my own descendants, none will bear the Senju name any longer."
He took a thick scroll from his sleeve and slowly unfurled it.
"Those who choose to leave the clan and change their surname may receive compensation from the clan's assets." Tobirama clearly laid out the terms. "Money, secret ninjutsu scrolls, land, shinobi tools... all will be distributed according to these provisions. It will be enough to ensure that every clan member receives resources and freedom for personal development far beyond anything they could imagine while bound to the clan."
The flickering candlelight reflected the complicated expressions on everyone's faces.
After the initial shock and anger, a subtle weighing of gains and losses began to take root. Losing the Senju name? It was certainly painful. But... Lord Hashirama's words had truly been alarming.
And the compensation list was so generous it left people speechless.
Secret techniques and wealth that once required risking one's life for the clan could now be obtained with ease.
Lord Hashirama and Lord Tobirama would become Hokage one after the other. This meant the Senju influence would remain, and no one would dare mistreat clan members who changed their surnames.
Without a unified will among the higher-ups, and with no prestigious figure stepping forward to lead resistance, the enormous benefits that could safeguard or even improve individual lives, the protection of future Hokage, and Hashirama Senju's unshakable belief in the ideal of the "village," forged through blood and fire... swiftly dissolved any will to resist.
Some of the younger clan members even showed longing in their eyes for freedom from the constraints of the ancient clan and the chance to begin new lives.
Toka looked at the two men. Outside the window, the cry of a night owl sounded like a dirge for the Senju clan.
They had chosen the "shinobi village," a place that carried dreams of the future, over the "shinobi clan," the glory of the past.
To dispel suspicions of a "Senju Konoha," to earn a true sense of belonging from the other shinobi clans, and to let the ideal of the village truly take root... they had personally dismantled the banner that had gathered countless lives of blood and glory beneath it.
In the end, she bowed deeply. Resistance was meaningless, and it was not wise.
In the Shinobi Village Era, the meaning of shinobi clans had already changed. Without the pressure of enemies surrounding them, ordinary clan members might truly gain more freedom and opportunity by abandoning the Senju name. Lord Hashirama believed this was the better system; for it, he had even killed Madara.
They would not be threatened by the loss of their name—because the Hokage was Hashirama Senju, and the next would be Senju Tobirama. They could easily obtain secret techniques and wealth that once demanded blood and sweat. From an individual perspective, this was even... an easier, more prosperous path, as well as the way Lord Hashirama hoped they would integrate into the greater family of the "village."
Thus, the once-glorious Senju clan silently merged into Konoha's streets and alleys like the ebbing tide.
Some chose new surnames and scattered through the village like seeds. Others stubbornly guarded their final pride, neither changing their names nor leaving the group. Toka was one of the latter. Shuji's ancestors and parents had been as well.
They were as inconspicuous as those who had changed their surnames, for there had always been many people without surnames in Konoha. For this reason, the Senju brothers had tacitly allowed it and left the Senju Old Residence to these final watchers, as a small consolation for the past.
Now, only Toka and Shuji lived permanently in the Old Residence. After the first generation passed away, most of their descendants moved into the Ninja Apartments assigned by the village or bought new homes in prosperous districts. Only during holidays did people return to the Old Residence, briefly reminisce about past glory, discuss matters within the village, and exchange information.
Shuji's father had grown up on stories of the Senju and remained in the Old Residence after starting a family. After both his parents died in battle, Toka took in the nine-year-old Shuji. She watched him graduate from the Ninja Academy at eleven, suffer grievous wounds that nearly killed him on the Kumogakure battlefield at fourteen, and ultimately be pulled back from death by Hashirama Cells.
Watching Toka's profile as she sank into distant, weighty memories, Shuji sat quietly beside her. Only after the old woman pulled herself free from those complicated emotions and motioned for him to leave did he softly excuse himself and return to his room.
