Ji An had never attempted the water-refining method before; he merely understood the principles behind this form of alchemy. Using the Nether Bone Fire to refine pills gave him the feeling of using the water method.

When using the Green Lotus Heart-Burning Fire for alchemy, one relied on the purifying properties of a Heaven and Earth Spirit Fire to enhance the efficacy of spiritual medicines.

At its core, purification was accomplished through burning at a suitable temperature. Coupled with the unique generative force of the Power of the Fire Element, it produced excellent results.

How, then, could the Nether Bone Fire enhance a pill's efficacy? The answer was cleansing.

The cold flame "baked" the outside of the pill furnace, while water-element spiritual qi formed within it, continuously washing away the impurities in the spiritual medicines.

Spiritual essences were continuously added, melting into the fluid, while Ji An closely monitored the changes occurring between the various components.

Adding yang-aspected essences was difficult, because if they were even slightly unsuitable, the cold flame and water-element spiritual qi would damage the medicinal properties.

If the essences reacted too violently inside the pill furnace, it could even cause the furnace to explode.

Normally, other Alchemists would choose to use Primordial Life Fire when refining Spirit Nurturing Divine Fire Pills. That method was the safest.

But Ji An wanted to maximize the medicinal efficacy, so he chose the most difficult approach.

Even among fine-quality pills, there would be slight differences in efficacy. Since he possessed a Heaven and Earth Spirit Fire, he should not pursue safety in alchemy. Only by drawing out every last bit of efficacy from the spiritual medicines could he do justice to the spirit fire within his dantian.
