Lu Xin did not quite understand why Mom had thanked that old man—or rather, the Fire Thief.
She had even said it twice.
It was not until they left the church that the fragile wooden door closed behind them...
Lu Xin suddenly realized that the small town that had originally stood outside the church had vanished. The low, tightly packed buildings were gone, as were the cramped, narrow flagstone paths between them. The few little flowers beneath the window lattices, dampened by the mist, were gone as well. So were the people living out their different lives behind those windows.
There was nothing where they stood but dark-red ground and aimlessly wandering winds.
Now and then, indistinct things would slowly raise their heads from behind the ruined remains, staring at them in fear.
This was not a seaside town. It was the abyss.
Lu Xin turned back in astonishment, only to discover that even the dilapidated church had changed.
It no longer seemed to possess a physical form. It was merely a shadow standing in the abyss, woven from light and darkness of varying degrees.
One could even vaguely see a monster covered in countless tentacles inside the church. It faced the statue of God at the far end, head lowered in silent prayer. The statue it prayed to was likewise a monster covered in countless tentacles.
"Was it all fake?"
Only after a long while did Lu Xin speak, somewhat stunned.
In fact, he had already noticed clues while fighting that old man.
When he had seized the old man by the throat, the surroundings had transformed into the illusory abyss more than once.
He simply had not realized it at the time.
Besides, he had never seen an abyssal illusion so similar to reality.
"Yes."
