Background / History

Before meeting Aozaki Touko, Altrouge learned of the young magus's talent and considered recruiting her as a subordinate to strengthen her faction against the Crimson Lord. Touko's status as a Magic User's heir made forcibly converting her into a Dead Apostle impractical. 12

Altrouge summoned Touko to a café and requested treatment for ailments that had troubled her for years. She offered access to her exceptional bloodline as compensation, while Touko instead demanded ten billion dollars and specialized research equipment. Altrouge accepted the arrangement despite suspecting that Touko wanted to use her Dead Apostle connections. 36 37

Her injuries had persisted for more than eight centuries. Touko developed specially tailored blood treatments after examining samples from Altrouge, and Altrouge repeatedly consumed Touko's blood as treatment over half a year. She also accepted an Elixir chosen by Touko's grandfather for its potential to heal her wounds. 39 46

Touko was capable of restoring Altrouge far faster, but deliberately prolonged the process: a fully recovered Altrouge would likely move immediately against the Crimson Lord, unite the Dead Apostles, and risk a wider war with humanity. During this period, however, the two became increasingly close, sharing meals and discussing Touko's dangerous pursuit of the Root. 40 41

Altrouge later admitted that she had initially intended to recover, turn Touko into a Dead Apostle by force, and make her a subordinate. Touko had similarly considered subduing Altrouge after becoming a Magic User. Their calculated cooperation instead developed into a genuine romantic relationship. 169

News of Altrouge's impending recovery provoked a Dead Apostle civil war, as rival factions feared a restored Black Princess. Touko negotiated to keep the Bartholomello family out of the hunt, while Altrouge prepared to confront the Crimson Lord and her rebellious subjects. 137 139 140 143

Altrouge became pregnant with Touko's child before the conflict. Although she wanted to fight personally, Touko and Arcueid prevented her from entering battle because of the pregnancy. After the opposing Dead Apostle forces were defeated, Altrouge centralized their formerly scattered power and became their acknowledged ruler. 139 147 150 201

She later gave birth to Remilia, a True Ancestor child with blue hair and powers connected to destiny. As Remilia's mother, Altrouge sought training that would correct her daughter's overly arrogant combat style, but could not bring herself to train her harshly herself. 168 188

Her gentleness is highly selective. Lidell observes that Altrouge's cold and arrogant nature is normally her genuine disposition, while Touko is one of the rare people she treats kindly. 51

Despite her possessiveness and jealousy toward Touko, Altrouge shows sincere concern for Touko's safety and fear of losing her to the Root. Her pregnancy and her treatment of Remilia reveal a protective, maternal side that contrasts with her former ruthlessness. 40 144 188
