At their request, Black Super provided M40A3 Sniper Rifles fitted with special-purpose scopes. Following Whistler's advice, they went to places where vampires might appear to watch for them and identify them.

The homemade special-purpose scopes mounted on the rifles were almost as big as telephoto camera lenses. Essentially, each was a small computer terminal connected to Black Super's vampire monitoring system.

Besides optical targeting, they could switch to thermal imaging, infrared, and other modes. They also offered facial recognition, checking the identity of anyone caught in the scope and whether their name appeared on his vampire list.

If someone was on his list, the results would be added to their entry. Once they were confirmed to be a vampire or not, the notes on the list would update automatically.

Cross and Fox didn't have to do any paperwork. All they had to do was point the rifles—which used long-range cameras with crosshairs superimposed on them as scopes—in a particular direction, and the computer would handle identification automatically.
