On the streets of New York late at night, the absence of Vampires and Werewolves causing trouble did not mean the city had reached a level of public safety where no one pocketed lost property and doors could be left unlocked at night.
Countless gangs, homeless drifters wandering the streets, and men and women reveling in the neon nightlife all moved about the Big Apple after dark.
They encountered all kinds of bizarre crap as well—robberies, rape, drugged-up people firing wildly in the streets as if setting off firecrackers. Even a single glance could earn someone a brutal beating.
In a sense, this was also a backlash after the extreme oppression of some time ago. The Vampires and Werewolves had originally intended to use bloody actions to intimidate all humanity, making these white, black, and yellow-skinned monkeys bow their heads and submit.
Night was naturally the stage of these dark creatures. Back then, anyone walking the streets could be dragged into the darkness at any moment by a monster that pounced from nowhere.
The lucky ones would be found by the police the next day and make the society pages of the newspapers. The unlucky ones either did not leave behind even a scrap of flesh or were stuffed into some hidden corner, never discovered, becoming one of the unsolved cases of missing persons.
Now that New York no longer faced the threat of Vampires and Werewolves, all the monsters and demons on humanity's side had emerged. Their destructive power was no less than that of monsters; they simply lacked infectiousness.
But New York was different tonight. In some unknown secret corner, creatures from outer space continuously devoured one living thing after another. They gained the energy needed to sustain their lives, as well as the knowledge needed to survive
