Biology & Physiology
Viral condition and transformation
Vampirism is caused by the Vampire Virus, which alters a host’s blood and cells. A recent bite generally completes the victim’s transformation within twenty-four hours unless the infection is stopped beforehand. 458
- Infected cells develop two nuclei, while red blood cells change from normal biconcave discs into abnormal biconvex cells. 464
- Unlike ordinary viruses, the Vampire Virus remains highly stable through replication; samples from ancient and newly created Vampires retain the same traits. 716
- Artificially removing this apparent genetic restriction created mindless, predatory monsters, suggesting that the virus’s stability may preserve intelligence and personality. 1190
- A Vampire’s bloodline does not die when its creator is destroyed; every turned descendant survives independently. 468
Physical capabilities and regeneration
Ordinary Vampires possess strength, speed, and durability beyond human limits. Their confidence in this physical superiority is a major reason many regard humans as inferior. 504 479
- Conventional bullets can wound them, but the projectiles are rapidly expelled and the injuries heal. 458
- Even severe cranial damage can regenerate, including lost brain tissue. 434
- Drinking blood enables recovery from major injuries unless the Vampire is directly burned to death. 468
- Their regeneration is not limitless: silver suppresses healing, while ultraviolet exposure and fire can destroy them completely. 460 468
Feeding and blood production
Vampires drink blood because their red bone marrow produces replacement red blood cells too slowly to sustain their altered bodies. 466
- Their blood dependence is physiological rather than proof that they are corpses. 466
- Some clans lure isolated people into controlled nightclubs or private feeding sites, selecting victims whose disappearances are unlikely to attract attention. 457
- Vampire saliva can partially seal bite wounds with enzymes, allowing victims to survive an attack long enough to become future bloodkin. 1086
- Certain European Vampires can extract memories from a victim’s blood, including information the victim may consciously have forgotten. 1144
Reproduction and aging
Vampires can reproduce and are capable of having children with humans; they do not possess reproductive isolation from humanity. 466 1167
- Their appearance is not permanently fixed at the age of transformation; visibly elderly Vampires exist. 478
- They can appear in mirrors, another trait distinguishing them from traditional undead folklore. 466
- The social distinction between “born” and “turned” Vampires is treated as a status claim rather than a clearly biological divide. 465
Weaknesses & Countermeasures
| Weakness / Measure | Effect on standard Vampires | Limitations and exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| Sunlight | Direct sunlight burns Vampires to ash. 1083 | Selene’s ancestral blood grants her sunlight immunity. 1125 |
| Ultraviolet light and UV ammunition | UV exposure burns Vampires internally; a UV round can reduce a struck Vampire to ash. 1130 1132 | Ordinary UV lamps may only injure or enrage them unless sufficiently powerful. 1092 |
| Silver / silver nitrate | Silver suppresses regeneration and can become lethal when paired with sufficient trauma. 460 | A non-vital silver wound can sometimes be survived through amputation; Budapest Vampires are immune to silver. 1132 1087 |
| Garlic extract | A full vial can kill a standard Vampire; garlic-based compounds also suppress bloodlust. 460 467 | Garlic’s active anti-Vampire effect comes from a specific compound mixture, not merely one component of garlic. 467 |
| First Embrace Serum | Can eliminate the virus before a victim fully transforms. 459 | It kills a fully transformed Vampire and is ineffective against Reapers. 459 713 |
| Infrared screening | Vampires’ abnormally low body temperatures can expose them at controlled checkpoints. 1092 | It is a detection tool rather than a means of identification by itself. |
| Erythropoietin | Can accelerate healing by increasing red-blood-cell production. 468 | Rapid healing consumes the Vampire’s own tissues without an external energy source, causing severe atrophy. 468 |
Society & Organization
Clans, councils, and population control
Vampire society is divided among competing clans, bloodlines, and political factions. The Mystikos Sect is identified as one of thirteen vampire clans, while Evernight Temple preserves the marks of twelve ancient clans that once dominated Los Angeles. 427 522
- The creation of new descendants requires approval from a clan leader or the Vampire Council. 1070
- Population limits are publicly justified through secrecy and Camarilla principles, but they also preserve humans as a food supply. 1070
- The Mystikos Sect follows population-control principles while infiltrating human society through finance, business partnerships, and influence. 427
- Wealthy elderly families seeking health, youth, or the Embrace have provided Vampires with political protection and financial backing. 428
- Vampires once held influence within the Continental Hotel system and American financial institutions. 1133
Human servants and exploitation
Vampires use humans as donors, devotees, servants, and political assets.
- Blood servants and vampire devotees conceal their loyalty online and attempt to prove themselves worthy of transformation. 436
- Vampire-backed Blood Ranches imprison humans as “blood livestock,” repeatedly drain them, and discard them once their blood production declines. 1119
- The Life Foundation was secretly funded by a Vampire clan and helped establish Blood Ranches in exchange for support for Carlton Drake’s scientific projects. 1164
- Some Vampire factions seek influential targets for conversion, intending to use their memories, positions, and isolation from human society to expand control. 1087
Decline of the old order
Modern surveillance, specialized weapons, and state-backed extermination undermined the secrecy that had protected Vampire power for centuries. 1084 1134
- European refugees and American clans formed a temporary Vampire Council after being driven from New York. 1133
- The Capulet and Montague Clans temporarily set aside their historic feud for collective survival. 1133
- The Council excluded weakened clans regardless of ancient titles, prioritizing usable power over heritage. 1133
- Internal paranoia intensified when police repeatedly located Vampire hideouts, leading the factions to suspect informants among their own ranks. 1134
Variants and Exceptional Vampires
| Type | Characteristics | Known countermeasures / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Vampire | Blood-dependent, regenerative, vulnerable to sunlight, UV radiation, garlic, and usually silver. 460 466 | Can be destroyed completely by sufficient silver trauma, UV exposure, or burning. 468 1130 |
| Reaper / New Breed Vampire | Infects humans and Vampires through contact; consumes flesh and organs as well as blood; has pale skin, exposed veins, green blood, baldness, and insect-like mouthparts. 713 | Garlic, silver, and the First Embrace Serum are ineffective; sunlight and UV weapons remain effective. 713 715 |
| Budapest Vampire | A European strain involved in the attack on NYPD headquarters. 1087 | Immune to silver; conventional anti-Vampire supplies may not work against them. 1087 |
| Daywalker / half-Vampire | Blade possesses both human and Vampire cells, retains enhanced physical abilities, and can walk in sunlight. 464 465 | Controls bloodlust through painful garlic injections and later a garlic-based reducing agent. 464 467 |
| Vampire-Werewolf hybrid | Michael Corvin carries both viruses through the Corvinus bloodline, granting exceptional strength and reduced silver vulnerability. 1105 1125 | His physiology is exceptionally rare; ordinary infection by both viruses is normally fatal. 1105 |
| Sunlight-immune Vampire | Selene carries Alexander Corvinus’s original blood and does not fear sunlight. 1125 | Her blood is considered valuable to factions seeking to remove Vampire weaknesses. 1119 |
History
Hidden influence and early conflicts
Vampires maintained influence through secrecy long before their public exposure. According to Abraham Whistler’s hunter oral history, President Abraham Lincoln led a purge that destroyed the Sabbat in North America, after which Camarilla Vampires allegedly manipulated his assassination. 1078
In 1996, the Mystikos Sect targeted Henry Brown because of his connection to Tony Stark and Stark Industries. Gitano Dragonetti attempted to recruit Henry as an infiltrator, offering wealth, health, eventual transformation, and advancement within Stark Industries while demanding leverage over Charlize Theron. 430 432
Henry rejected the proposal and later destroyed Old Money Vampires James and Lilith Arden with a silver nitrate-loaded cross. Their deaths left no bodies or usable physical evidence, preventing a conventional murder prosecution. 479 482
Conflict with Blade and the Reapers
After Vampires infected Jasper Baden, Black Super funded Blade and Abraham Whistler’s operations, supplying surveillance systems, First Embrace Serum, UV ammunition, and silver-nitrate bullets. 459 461
Blade’s raids disrupted Vampire nests across Los Angeles, forcing surviving factions to retreat deeper into secrecy and rely more heavily on wealthy human supporters. 461 469
The Reaper outbreak forced traditional Vampires to seek Blade’s help because the new strain could infect them as easily as humans. Blade and other hunters ultimately exterminated the Reapers on the West Coast, though their creator’s research links later pointed toward Umbrella. 712 738 1119
Exposure and war
The European Union publicly confirmed the existence of Vampires and Werewolves in 2004, presenting living specimens, genetic research, transmission data, and early-infection treatments supplied by Antigen. 1083
Europe classified Vampires as harmful organisms and began mass identification and extermination operations using sunlight, garlic extract, UV bullets, and specialized screening. Tens of thousands were killed within a month. 1083
Vampire retaliation in the United States—including attacks on police, civilians, and political targets—destroyed public support for coexistence. The discovery of nationwide Blood Ranches pushed the United States into open war against Vampires and Werewolves. 1087 1122 1123
Legal Status and Registration
Before public disclosure, human law struggled to prosecute the killing of a Vampire because their deaths left no body, blood, weapon traces, or scientifically verifiable victim. 482
- The European Union formally denied Vampires human status by classifying them as harmful organisms. 1083
- The United States later created a selective registration and whitelist system for supernatural residents under government supervision. 1141
- Henry Sturgis became the first recognized Vampire under U.S. law; Blade became the second through S.H.I.E.L.D.’s guarantee. 1141
- Selene and Michael Corvin became the third and fourth whitelist entries. 1147
- Registered Vampires must swear allegiance to the United States, accept lawful residence and eventual citizenship, and obey restrictions on their supernatural status. 1146
- Registered Vampires may not create new bloodlines except through natural reproduction; violating this condition results in loss of citizenship. 1146
