No matter how busy her college coursework got, Gwen came to the Hepburn Family home on East 49th Street at least once a week to pet the cats. Today, though, while she showed up as usual, she did not pounce on Kitty at the sight of her and send the tabby racing around the house.
The bright young college student wore a grave expression as she sat with Katharine Hepburn, Skye, and Lorna in the living room, where they were watching a large-screen TV soap opera through a projector.
Noticing that Gwen was covered in a little dirt and looked rather disheveled, the elderly woman reached out and dusted the girl off. "Child, what happened to you? Did you fall on the way here?"
Noticing her own appearance, Gwen brushed at the dust as well. "On the subway here, I ran into... Spider-Man, maybe? I'm not really sure.
"Anyway, there was someone dressed a lot like him, except he was completely black, fighting a sand-man-shaped monster in the underground station. They crashed into the subway, then fought their way into the carriage, making the train shake nonstop while speeding up and slowing down.
"A lot of people had gotten used to not holding onto the handrails or straps. They couldn't keep their footing and rolled all over the carriage, knocking other people down too. I was trying to pull people up, and I ended up rolling into a heap as well. I probably got all this dirt then."
Skye immediately poked at the dirty parts of Gwen's clothes. "Then you're in trouble. Even if you don't have any visible injuries, you'll probably end up bruised and sore after you get home."
"Really?" Gwen was not very convinced as she pinched at the places where she had been knocked around.
