Webs tugged and bounced, Web Bullets flew, and webbing snared his enemies. In the cramped space, Spider-Man was in his element. He moved with such agility that he seemed like an entire army.

By contrast, The Lizard's attacks were broad and sweeping, but there were few places for him to stand. More often than not, Spider-Man left him dizzy by darting left and right, up and down. Not only did attacks catch him from blind spots, but webs kept wrapping around him, hindering his movements.

If he used his claws to climb the sewer walls, he would have only his long tail left to lash out with, making him even less agile. To Spider-Man, he would be a sitting duck, ready to be pummeled at will.

The Lizard could therefore only stand on a platform with limited room if he wanted to make use of what few advantages he had.

As imposing as The Lizard's new ally, Sandman, looked, he was all show and little substance in a sewer lashed by rushing water. His only advantage was that no matter how Spider-Man scattered his sandy body, he never suffered any real damage.

While Sandman was still moving around in human form, Spider-Man could blast holes through him with Web Bullets. Once he assumed his giant form, however, Spider-Man had few effective options left.

Fortunately, the water beneath this cramped space flowed fast. Even if Sandman wanted to spread out his entire sandy body to trap Spider-Man, he had to take care not to get swept into the current. This prevented him from fighting freely, and Spider-Man repeatedly broke through his loosely packed body.

But both The Lizard and Sandman were old opponents of Spider-Man's. That also meant they knew how to fight him.
