Siberia, Secret Research Institute No. 4012019. Director Peter Roslov's log.
1970/4/20:
Several days ago, a giant meteorite was discovered falling in Siberia. After conducting an on-site investigation, the local garrison discovered an advanced escape pod clearly not belonging to either our country or the United States' technology. A baby was found inside.
Under orders from above, the Alien Research Institute was established around the crash site of the escape pod. The infant was designated "Alien One" and placed under secret protection and study.
1974/6/26:
Some idiot actually suggested dissecting our only living specimen! How did that guy get assigned to my institute? Which KGB higher-up had a prostitute bear him a son and shoved him into my institute to pad his credentials?!
Send that idiot to hell. They refuse to provide more research funding, yet they want to exhaust our limited research resources in one go. That bastard must be an American spy to propose something so stupid.
I'm reporting him and having the KGB investigate that bastard. We need to find every woman his sperm ever reached and completely cut off that foolish bloodline.
1976/8/14:
Alien One is already six years old. Observations of his growth indicate that he is much like a human, and his various physical indicators support that conclusion. The only thing we cannot determine is just how much he can eat.
Some researchers proposed giving him sufficient nutrition to see how far he could develop.
However, another faction of researchers worried that if Alien One were allowed to grow normally, some uncontrollable changes might occur.
Mutants have already caused enough trouble. Until we find an effective means of control, limiting Alien One's development would be the most suitable choice.
Between the two sides, I chose to adopt the conservatives' view.
Aside from concerns about losing control, we have only this one living specimen. I do not wish to impose unnecessary pressure because of unpredictable expectations and lose this valuable sample.
This isn't 1944, when Tsarist Russian rebels joined forces with Nazi Germany to conduct a demon-summoning experiment on the coast of Scotland.
They had originally hoped to summon a powerful demon god to wreak havoc deep within Allied territory. Instead, they only summoned a demon infant. Was that supposed to be a joke?
I heard the baby had been raised by American scientists into a soldier to fight supernatural forces.
Using a demon for such things is only natural. But all I have here is an alien. No one can expect him to fight like a demon, can they?
Train him into a soldier? Then let the idiot who proposed it bring me the funding from the Winter Soldier Program or the Red Room Program. If we have more funding to provide protective measures, I will agree to such foolishness.
1980/2/19:
The higher-ups are extremely dissatisfied with the institute's results. We still have no way to decipher the escape pod's technology, and we cannot even replicate its materials.
Nor have we obtained anything of eye-opening value from Alien One.
The Super-Soldier Serum project abandoned the materials that could be obtained from Alien One long ago. Neither his blood nor his spinal fluid has shown any superhuman effect of enhancing humans.
Moreover, judging from Alien One's X-rays, if they were shown to an uninformed doctor, they would only say that this was the skeleton of a completely ordinary person.
If they were shown his other physical data as well, they would probably conclude only that he was a child suffering from long-term malnutrition.
In truth, if I did not know this child was an alien who had fallen to Earth aboard an advanced escape pod, I would have reached the same conclusion. But now, even I cannot help questioning that explanation.
To verify it, I used every connection I had to question the first soldiers who discovered him.
Because all the signs forced me to suspect that those men had swapped out the alien from the escape pod. What the institute received was merely an ordinary human child.
But after cross-examination, the only conclusion was that Alien One had indeed been carried out of that escape pod.
Was this meant to tell me that the science-fiction fairy tale of humanity originating from outer space was real? Or was it meant to prove something else?
Unfortunately, philosophical inquiry cannot count as a satisfactory result. I need to produce something more convincing.
1983/9/30:
Although our motherland did not directly participate in the Mutant war in Egypt, we still obtained a considerable amount of intelligence indirectly. Especially the various terrifying abilities displayed in battle.
Because of this, every superhuman research institute received directives from above, and this institute's lack of progress was criticized once again. More than a decade of funding has produced nothing at all.
Do those fools expect findings like, "Replace your blood with a virgin's blood, and you can remain forever young"? And then drain my only specimen dry!
They might as well capture a few Vampires for research. There are plenty of those things in Eastern Europe.
I believe Alien One must hold the secret to human evolution. Otherwise, his appearance and various physical characteristics would not be so similar to ours.
I simply have not yet found the right point of entry. Or perhaps current technology cannot yet observe what we need to observe. Maybe I should start with genetics and investigate more minute details.
Otherwise, I simply cannot imagine that an alien race with technology capable of supporting small spacecraft traveling through the cosmos would neglect biotechnology for extending life spans and strengthening the body.
The mysteries of that body are absolutely more valuable than that escape pod!
To keep the research going, I had no choice but to compromise with the higher-ups and hand over the alien escape pod.
To this day, the institute has still been unable to fully reverse-engineer the escape pod's technology. Aside from necessary sampling, the main reason was that I did not want it damaged excessively. My attitude toward it was the same as my attitude toward Alien One.
But the higher-ups apparently did not approve of this approach. Especially after the United States announced the Strategic Defense Initiative in March and decided to vigorously develop its military power in outer space, they became even more anxious for related materials and progress.
In order to continue researching Alien One, handing over the alien escape pod was a necessary compromise. At the same time, they would transfer away the relevant researchers and streamline the institute's organizational structure.
In exchange, the institute's funding was not directly reduced by the portion allocated to escape pod research, but only slightly decreased. This also meant more research funds could be invested in Alien One.
I hope this price will lead to a breakthrough.
1986/12/8:
The leader's shift in direction sounded like a good thing, but I did not think so. Specific criticism is not the focus of this record, but I only hoped it would not affect the institute's operations. Obviously, that was merely wishful thinking.
To support the new direction, the higher-ups forced many unproductive projects to shut down and redirected their funding elsewhere. The Alien Research Institute was unfortunately placed on the watch list, and pressure that could no longer be delayed was closing in.
Fortunately, Alien One has reached adolescence, and his physical growth should have reached a certain stage. Therefore, I had no choice but to approve some experiments I had not dared attempt in the past, using extreme methods to test that body's functions.
I hope this change will bring me some progress.
1988/1/7:
Damn policies. They have not only affected our motherland, but even our allied nations have suffered as well. The muzzle tied around that German Wolverine's mouth is loosening. Can't anyone see it?
The institute's funding and supply of materials have also run into problems. Food that used to be distributed by ration now has to be bought with rubles, and the prices keep rising.
I suspect that if this continues, the day when half a million marks buys a single loaf of black bread will arrive in my beloved motherland as well.
Because of this, I had no choice but to contact some old friends and use their connections to raise funds and supplies on my own.
There is already a glimmer of hope in Alien One. While his remarkable healing ability cannot compare to those Mutants with regenerative powers, he can recover from the same injuries faster than ordinary humans, and most wounds leave no scars.
Unfortunately, Alien One's genetic profile still cannot be deciphered. Still, seeing this finally convinced me that what I have is an alien, rather than an Earthling who was swapped in and disguised as one.
At least with current genetic technology, none of the verified methods can be replicated on Alien One. The only reasonable explanation is that Alien One's genetic structure differs from that of Earth's life forms.
Yet this discovery still failed to persuade the higher-ups to continue investing funds. They only said they wanted something more practical, such as a Super-Soldier Serum capable of creating more Winter Soldiers, or black technology that could make the Fire Fox Project possible.
I can only find ways to trade the resources at hand for things that will allow the research to continue.
It is dangerous, and the sources of those funds are questionable. But I cannot concern myself with that anymore. Alien One's secrets are like a goddess lifting a corner of her skirt before my eyes.
All I need is one key, one flash of inspiration, one opportunity, or some other goddamn thing.
1989/11/9:
Damn it, the wall has fallen. East Germany's continued existence is hanging by a thread.
The voices of doubt are no longer confined to a small number of far-sighted elites. Even ordinary people have begun questioning their circumstances. Why are things neither as wonderful as the leaders claim nor as prosperous as the Western world?
I dare not say whether the direction is right or wrong, but something has definitely gone wrong somewhere.
I hope someone with a brain cleans up this mess soon. I feel I am only a hair's breadth from success. This is the critical moment. I cannot be disturbed.
1990/8/1:
Damn it, damn it! An old colleague from the Cheka told me that the KGB has its eye on me.
I am loyal to the motherland, loyal to the cause. Everything I have done has been for a better future. What right do they have to stop me?!
Aren't they brewing some kind of plan? Why am I the one who must be eliminated?
I will not leave. I will stay until the end. This place is the last work of my life's blood. I will not give it up easily.
The August 1 entry was the final record.
