Yu Hai originally captured Poliwag as his starter on a deserted island because he had no opportunity to choose another first Spirit. Although he initially regarded the capture as reluctant, the two formed a deep bond through training and survival. 413

From an early stage, Yu Hai trained Poliwag patiently despite its limited talent, demonstrating running himself, helping it up after falls, and valuing its willingness to work hard. 42 He later accumulated a varied team, built individualized training schedules, and developed Poliwhirl, Kingler, and Rhyhorn as his three principal forces. 190 191
