Background / History

Xiao Ying lost his parents in a pirate attack eight years before learning the truth from his grandfather. He was raised around the Oddish Orphanage and the Sailor Bar, where his grandfather—known as the Old Man from the Tavern or Old Drunkard—served as his only direct relative. 196 211 595

Following a defeat, the Old Man pushed Xiao Ying to seek out Yu Hai by promising to reveal how his parents died if Xiao Ying became stronger. He also left him high-quality Energy Cubes and 100,000 League Coins to support his training. 196

Xiao Ying initially approached Yu Hai because of Yu Hai’s powerful Poliwhirl, but their connection developed into a mentor-student and brotherly relationship. Under Yu Hai’s guidance, Xiao Ying began studying Spirit Abilities, type matchups, battle strategy, and the responsibility a Trainer bears toward their Pokémon. 200 201 211

During the rescue of Xiao Nai and other kidnapped orphanage children, Xiao Ying confronted an abductor’s accomplice while Yu Hai fought the leader. He later disclosed that he had killed one kidnapper and obtained a Primeape during the incident, an experience that hardened his resolve to protect others and never become a burden. 205 207 210

When his grandfather tried to replace Yu Hai as his teacher, Xiao Ying refused. He chose to continue following Yu Hai despite the danger and consequences, after which his grandfather accepted Yu Hai as his Trainer and revealed the circumstances of Xiao Ying’s parents’ deaths. 211

Xiao Ying was initially stubborn, prideful, and uncomfortable around unfamiliar girls, often looking to Yu Hai for direction in social or competitive situations. His name was also frequently mistaken for a girl’s name, something he found frustrating. 200 215
