"Just a little mischief." Dewitt suddenly broke into a sly grin.
"Just a little mischief?" Tang Jiang and Deng Puhe asked in unison.
"You know Fermat, right?" Dewitt said with a grin. "Fermat had an irritating habit: he only wrote down the conclusion and never the derivation."
"Everyone knows. Fermat had a bit of a sadistic sense of humor. He was always writing things like... I can prove this, but I have to go wash my hair; I can prove this formula, but I have to feed the cat now." Deng Puhe nodded. "Old habits die hard. He pulled the same trick with Fermat's Conjecture, leaving a note that he had a marvelous proof but there wasn't enough room to write it down. That made the mathematical community spend a full 350 years verifying it and wasted countless mathematicians' time. It was pretty infuriating!"
"Before I die, I want to pull one last prank." Dewitt winked. "I declare that the Song He Manifold is correct, but I'm dying and don't have time to write it down!"
Tang Jiang couldn't hold back his laughter. He hadn't expected the truth to be so absurd. Deng Puhe also laughed with an utterly speechless expression.
"That way, my legend will be passed down through the ages!" Dewitt gloated.
"The harder the Song He Manifold is to understand, the longer the mathematical community will take to verify it, and the more valuable my contribution will become! When the day comes that the Song He Manifold is widely acknowledged by the mathematical community, everyone will remember the mysterious Dewitt!"
"Even if the proof is eventually verified to be wrong, who would mock a dead old man? Everyone will say I was delirious before my death. They won't blame me too harshly."
"All in all, I'm invincible!"
