Background / History

Hata no Kokoro originated as a tsukumogami born from masks used over a long period by the Noh performer Hata no Kawakatsu. Her masks are inhabited by souls; when selling one, she asks its new owner to care for it properly. After being summoned as Lancer, she and Reimu used their available funds to open competing shops: Kokoro sold masks while Reimu sold amulets. 9

During the Imperial Capital incident, she fought while protecting Koizumi. She held back against Seryu's Teigu Koro because she liked the dog-like Teigu, but broke away when Reimu ordered her to extract Koizumi. Kokoro repelled the Imperial Guards, took Koizumi by the hand, and flew him out of the city; she noticed Leone following them and accelerated to avoid pursuit. 18 19 20

After their retreat, Kokoro was distressed over losing her shop and masks. Koizumi reassured her that they could make and sell masks anywhere with materials and customers, prompting her to call him “Master” with visible excitement. 20

She became Koizumi's principal sparring partner while he trained to control Remilia's vampire power. When his vampire consciousness began to overtake him at night, Kokoro directly confronted it, demanding that it leave her Master's body. She later defeated his berserk state, forcing his body to disperse into bats before he re-formed. 21 22

At Night Raid's base, Kokoro continued selling masks and learned the true names of Hundred Personas Hassan and Serenity Hassan by approaching them as potential mask customers. Night Raid members bought and displayed her Noh masks, treating her as one of their own. 35 37 38

Appearance

Kokoro is an expressionless girl approximately 1.58 meters tall, making her slightly taller than Reimu. 9

  • Commonly wears Noh masks to communicate her emotions.
  • Carries a guan dao in battle. 21 32
  • Can manifest multiple masks around herself during combat. 32 34
  • Her uncovered face remains largely expressionless, though she has gradually begun showing emotion without a mask. 21

Personality

Kokoro is direct but emotionally clumsy. Rather than changing her facial expression, she uses specific masks to convey anger, calmness, worry, joy, surprise, and other feelings. Her attachment to masks is sincere: she takes pride in making them, becomes upset when her craftsmanship is insulted, and mourns losing them. 9 20 29

She is competitive, particularly toward Reimu, though their rivalry began from a casual remark about Reimu being a “poor shrine maiden.” She is also fond of declaring, “Let’s bet on the title of the strongest!” when challenging opponents. 9 33 34

Kokoro is highly protective of Koizumi. She monitors his condition, supports him after overexertion, trains him despite his extreme methods, and resolves to remain nearby in case his vampire power goes berserk. Her concern becomes increasingly open as their relationship develops. 19 21 22 29
