Background

During his life, Zhang Shun was a Liangshan water-force vanguard and scout. His nickname, White Striped Fish in Waves, referred both to his fair, silver-white complexion and to his extraordinary skill in water; he specialized in underwater ambushes, infiltration, and intelligence gathering while leading the Water Ghost Camp. 56

He died while attempting to infiltrate Hangzhou's Yongjin Gate alone and open it for the Liangshan army. Discovered by the defenders, he was killed in the water by a barrage of arrows—an unresolved death that later became his deepest inner demon. 56 725 726

After death, Zhang Shun manifested spiritually, possessed his elder brother to kill Fang Tianding, and was received by the Dragon Lord of Xihu Zhenze as Protector of Jinhua in the Water Mansion Dragon Palace. The imperial court subsequently honored him as General Jinhua and established a temple for his incense worship. 57

By the time Lin Chen summoned him, Zhang Shun's original temple had fallen into ruin and no longer supplied incense offerings. 57

Appearance

Zhang Shun is a fair-skinned, handsome divine official with an intelligent bearing. His original visualization describes a body as pale as snow and white silk, suited to vanishing beneath the waves like a streak of white light. 57

  • His Epic form carries a trident, moonlight, river-water energy, and the presence of a Water Mansion general. 396
  • After conquering Yongjin Gate, his combat form is covered in dense White Jade Golden Scales with a hard, metallic sheen. 728
  • During his fusion with Lin Chen as Erlang Shen, his scales transform into silver chainmail, accompanied by a Three Mountains Flying Phoenix Crown and a goose-yellow battle robe. 849

Personality

Zhang Shun initially addresses Lin Chen with formal reverence as “Divine Master,” but relaxes after Lin Chen asks to be treated as a brother. He is straightforward, loyal, and retains the rough sincerity of a Liangshan water bandit even after gaining divinity. 57 396

He is fiercely averse to passivity in battle. Zhang Shun would rather risk himself than watch others die to reclaim what is his, and he is willing to sacrifice his life to save allies. 147 1246

His loyalty to Lin Chen is absolute. When summoned in battle, he acts without hesitation, trusting Lin Chen even when the order requires him to expose himself to danger. 848

  • White Jade Golden Scales — Raises physical and magical defense while emitting Dragon Qi that deters aquatic creatures. 728
  • Soul Returns to Golden Gate — Upon a fatal death, he may discard a Natal Bond Dragon Scale and return to Yongjin Gate for rebirth through Corpse Molting. 728
  • His durability allows him to endure attacks that his former “glass-cannon assassin” self would have needed to evade. 1107

Erlang Shen Fusion

Zhang Shun can merge with Lin Chen and Wu Song through their interconnected destinies.

  • His water-official nature complements Wu Song's mountain-hunting symbolism, allowing the three to manifest an Erlang Shen form associated with flood control and dragon slaying. 153
  • During the fusion, Lin Chen inherits Zhang Shun's water-control traits and Zhang Shun's restored divine right arm helps compensate for Lin Chen's injured right hand. 154
  • Zhang Shun later serves as the vice destiny in a renewed Erlang Shen fusion, retaining divine afterglow afterward and wielding the Three-Pointed Double-Edged Saber. 864
