Background / History
Bringing Ye Zi to Konoha
After Jiraiya remained behind to care for Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan, Orochimaru and Tsunade encountered Ye Zi. Orochimaru initially considered killing him, as he had previously suggested killing the three war orphans to end their suffering. Recognizing Ye Zi’s potential value changed his decision, and he brought him to Konoha instead 74.
Ye Zi subsequently lived with Orochimaru, whose hostility toward an unexpected interruption taught him not to intrude recklessly. Orochimaru later volunteered to lead the team containing Ye Zi, Kushina, and Bei Xingye 9 15 16.
During the Land of Ash mission, Orochimaru’s identity as a Sannin alarmed the opposing forces. When Stone ninja later demanded Ye Zi’s surrender, he challenged Hiruzen over Konoha’s willingness to compromise. He ultimately allowed Ye Zi to flee, despite developing killing intent toward him 32 38 336.
Research and wartime command
Orochimaru’s cooperation with Danzō gave him access to forbidden techniques and supported research into transplanting Sharingan into non-Uchiha bodies. The work began with attempts to make human subjects accept Hashirama’s cells and progressed through extensive live experimentation 109 261.
Alongside his laboratory work, he continued serving Konoha. Hiruzen sent him and Tsunade to lead forces against the Land of Earth, and he later accepted another important wartime assignment 47 180.
Against the Third Raikage, Orochimaru suffered his first thoroughly decisive defeat. He personally held the Raikage back to reduce Konoha’s casualties, was injured, and shifted to harassment aimed at threatening the Cloud forces’ rear rather than winning frontal battles. Ye Zi later saved him after the Raikage annihilated his team, but their reunion ended in suspicion and threats of future hostility 201 206.
Exposure and defection
Hiruzen had considered Orochimaru as a possible successor but ultimately ruled him out. Although Danzō blamed insufficient popular support, the narrative identifies Hiruzen’s recognition of Orochimaru’s ambition as the decisive obstacle 177 229.
Orochimaru’s kidnapping of village ninja for experiments eventually attracted Hiruzen’s attention. Danzō urged him to move outside Konoha, then ordered the destruction of evidence linking them when the village mobilized against him 229 237.
Hiruzen confronted him inside his laboratory but hesitated to kill him. Orochimaru incapacitated Hiruzen, Enma, and the accompanying Anbu rather than finishing them off, then escaped through his base’s corridors. He fought Jiraiya, summoned Manda, and used Shadow Clones to divide the pursuit and obscure his original body from the Byakugan 238 240.
Ye Zi helped disrupt the capture operation and subsequently offered cooperation. Injured and unable to refuse, Orochimaru accepted, collected his research data and Uchiha Jin, and moved to Ye Zi’s stronghold in the Land of Earth. Despite the chapter title “Orochimaru Joins,” Ye Zi specifically prevented him from joining Akatsuki, reserving him for research with Nanako 244 247.
Natural Energy and the attack on Konoha
Orochimaru explored ancient sites associated with Tailed Beasts, seeking an unknown energy and clues to the ninja world’s history. His research into Jūgo’s enzymes eventually connected that energy to Ryūchi Cave, where the White Snake Sage identified it as Natural Energy 365 366 385 386 387.
He rejected the Sage’s proposed injection method after recognizing that an excessive dose could make failure inevitable. Instead, he pursued a combination of Curse Marks, Sage Chakra, and sealing knowledge, travelling with Ye Zi and Kotoha to the ruins of Uzushio Village 387 388 391.
A later confrontation with Jiraiya demonstrated the gap between them: Jiraiya’s Sage Mode overwhelmed Orochimaru, and Ye Zi took over the battle. Orochimaru withdrew with the injured Kotoha and later rescued an unconscious Ye Zi, severing the arm bearing Minato’s teleportation mark and sending it away inside an explosive-tagged snake 398 400 407.
After initially rejecting a retaliatory attack on Konoha as suicidal, Orochimaru agreed to help when Ye Zi disclosed information about the Rinnegan and his reanimated Kage-level assets. He supplied intelligence from a village spy and controlled reanimated clan members and giant snake summons during the ensuing assault 410 417 425.
War against the Allied Shinobi Forces
Orochimaru helped build Ye Zi’s forces through Curse Mark development, Hashirama-cell research, and a clone army created using the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. During the war, he directed reanimated powerhouses across multiple battlefields, including Hashirama and Tobirama 477 579 593 625.
His control was not absolute. Madara freed himself from the reanimation technique, while Obito later infiltrated Orochimaru’s command cave with Kamui. Obito’s attacks forced Orochimaru to use a costly replacement-body technique; the interruption allowed Hashirama and Tobirama to break free 591 637 638.
After acquiring Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan, Orochimaru rescued Ye Zi from Madara and sustained him with pieces of his own Sage Chakra–infused flesh. He then helped poison the White Snake Sage from inside its body, creating the opportunity for Ye Zi to devour it 653 656 658.
Following their return, Ye Zi tasked him with keeping surviving Allied Forces away from the principal battle. He remained beside Ye Zi afterward and witnessed the appearance of the Sage of Six Paths 662 677.
Appearance
Orochimaru’s documented appearance emphasizes pale skin, long hair, and snake-like facial features 109 244 365.
- Snake-like eyes with eerie eyeshadow and an icy, intimidating gaze 9 365.
- Purple lips and a long tongue, which he uses to lick his lips and blood from his face 109 229.
- Sage Mode changes include pronounced snake transformation and small silver scales beside his nostrils 477 637.
- Later dōjutsu consists of the pair of Mangekyō Sharingan taken from Obito 653.
Personality
Orochimaru pursues immortality and the “Gate of Truth,” treating research as more important than conventional morality. His experiments include vivisection on children, the kidnapping of village ninja, and the manipulation of living subjects. He is also intensely territorial about valuable specimens: when Danzō proposes using Ye Zi even as a corpse, Orochimaru answers, “He is mine” 109 229.
His ambition is tempered by calculated caution. He refuses the White Snake Sage’s potentially lethal instruction, initially rejects an immediate attack on Konoha, and prefers more stable methods than Ye Zi’s high-risk approach. Once committed to a project, however, he can neglect food and sleep and draw Nanako into the same exhausting routine 385 387 410 579.
His attachment to others is not wholly absent. He spares Hiruzen during his escape, protects Ye Zi from Danzō’s claims, and later risks death to rescue Ye Zi from Madara. Their relationship develops from possessive interest into cooperation marked by unusual concern and mutual respect 109 238 653 662.
He also has a deliberately cruel sense of humor. Reanimating Dan Katō becomes an opportunity to provoke Ye Zi and promise Dan a reunion with Tsunade before suppressing his consciousness 261 262.
Abilities & Skills
Elemental Ninjutsu
- Earth Release: One of his principal specialties; uses it to immobilize Gama Ken and attacks Jiraiya with Earth Dragon Bullet 373 398.
- Wind Release: Vacuum Wave: Produces numerous rotating wind blades against Aburame insects 373.
- Fire and Wind combinations: Uses other nature transformations when insects counter his preferred Earth Release and snake techniques 373.
Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning
- Releases pythons from his sleeves to attack at close range 238.
- Summons small snakes, Manda, and other giant snakes through his connection with the Ryūchi Cave clan 81 238 294 425.
- Uses snakes as hidden sentries, messengers, and carriers for traps 407 416.
- Teaches Ye Zi summoning hand seals and Reverse Summoning Jutsu, indirectly enabling his acquisition of Glutton 81 467.
Human Modification and Cell Research
- Studies Hashirama-cell compatibility, Sharingan transplantation, and the use of non-Uchiha bodies to wield ocular powers 109.
- Produces a modified arm for Danzō containing five Sharingan when handed over 250.
- Investigates Ye Zi’s cellular vitality and its relationship to regeneration 250.
- Has undergone soft-tissue modification himself 477.
- Earlier attempts to create Wood Release users fail; his proposed Curse Mark method for improving Hashirama-cell implantation also fails 248 386.
- By Chapter 477, he has not implanted Hashirama’s cells into himself because of the risks 477.
Curse Marks
- Grants recipients additional power through an implanted mark, later incorporating Sage Chakra 249 477.
- First form: Black, flame-like markings spread over the body and increase chakra 477.
- Second form: Markings merge into a reddish transformation; the demonstrated clone develops enlarged arms and curved, blade-like barbs 477.
- Increases strength, speed, and chakra while avoiding Jūgo’s uncontrolled berserk state 477.
- Survival remains a concern; Hashirama-cell clones produce unusually favorable results and do not represent standard human subjects 477.
- Teaches Ye Zi the principles and application method rather than retaining exclusive use 477.
Sage Mode and Inorganic Reincarnation
- Uses Sage Mode to enhance his combat abilities and perception, although his version is imperfect 477 660.
- Inorganic Reincarnation Technique: Animates and manipulates surrounding inorganic matter; creates stone spears from a cave’s floor during his fight with Obito 637.
- Coats senbon in Sage Chakra to increase piercing power, though this is insufficient to penetrate the White Snake Sage’s scales 658.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Summons a dead person’s soul into a physical body using preserved tissue and a living sacrifice 261.
- Cannot theoretically summon a soul that no longer exists 261.
- Sacrifice quality affects the resulting body’s strength; he considers Hashirama-cell clones especially suitable 261.
- Uses inhibition talismans, personality suppression, and direct control to turn the reanimated into weapons 262 427.
- Shares their vision to monitor distant battles and locate Ye Zi 653.
- Control has practical limits: Madara independently breaks free, while interruptions during Obito’s attack release the First and Second Hokage 591 637 638.
- Hashirama’s Wood Release and Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God are abilities he directs through their reanimated bodies, not techniques he is shown personally possessing 594 625.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui
- Uses Obito’s transplanted eyes to phase through attacks and travel through the Kamui dimension 653 657 658.
- Transports Ye Zi away from Madara and bypasses the White Snake Sage’s external defenses 653 658.
- Must become tangible while absorbing another person into Kamui, creating a dangerous opening during rescue attempts 653.
- Initially can use the eyes but has not mastered their abilities skillfully 653.
Escape and Survival Techniques
- Uses Shadow Clones to distribute chakra, confuse Byakugan identification, and divert pursuers 240.
- Sets explosive traps inside snakes to delay Minato’s teleportation-based pursuit 407.
- Survives catastrophic injuries by emerging from his original body through its mouth in a new, intact body. This specialized Substitution Technique consumes nearly seventy percent of his chakra during Obito’s attack 637.
- Is not inherently immune to all poisons: venomous insect bites numb his arm until he uses snake gall to suppress their effects 371.

— Questioning the White Snake Sage’s teaching method 387.
“Attacking Konoha now is too irrational. If you want to die, I won't stop you, but I won't go die with you.”
— Rejecting Ye Zi’s initial retaliation plan 410.
