Background / History

Kotoha is the daughter of Bōjiān Shenmu, a Kusagakure shinobi. She first meets Ye Zi while guiding Orochimaru's team toward the Land of Ash. Having fought and believed she defeated him, she becomes fixated on challenging him again; Ye Zi is the first shinobi from a great nation she has fought. 30 31

She later serves in Konohagakure as a jōnin rented from Kusagakure, sending most of her mission rewards back to her home village. She initially operates alongside the Uchiha siblings under Ye Zi, then joins Team Nine with Kurenai Yūhi and Might Guy. 77 86 243

Kotoha's specialty is assassination. Her quiet, precise poisoned senbon complement allies who can create openings through genjutsu or close-range pressure. She becomes a mentor and sparring partner for Kurenai, while also warning Team Nine's younger members not to depend on rescue during missions. 77 89 131

After Ye Zi is presumed dead, Kotoha mourns at his cenotaph. When he returns and asks her to spy on Konoha, she agrees immediately, motivated by her wish to stand beside him and “walk into [his] heart.” 155 194 195

She openly defects when Ye Zi clashes with Konoha, assassinating five Konoha jōnin with poisoned senbon and declaring her choice to stand with him. Her action severs the relationship represented by her placement in Konoha between Kusagakure and Konohagakure. 242 243

To become more useful in Ye Zi's campaign to capture Tailed Beasts, Kotoha accepts a dangerous Hashirama Cell experiment intended to grant her Wood Release. The procedure succeeds, though her chakra reserves remain a recurring limitation in prolonged combat. 248 249 256 274

During the operation against Kirigakure, she faces six Mist Anbu alone. She kills opponents with poisoned Wood Release thorns, expends nearly all of her chakra trying to trap Mei Terumī and Ao, and deliberately enters Mei's Acid Mist for one final senbon attack. Kotoha later shields Ye Zi from Minato Namikaze's Great Ball Rasengan and poisons Minato in the process. The injuries prove fatal despite Kushina's efforts to save her; before dying, Kotoha is relieved that Ye Zi escaped. 407 408

Ye Zi retrieves her body from Konoha and uses Impure World Reincarnation to return her soul. Though grateful to be beside him again, Kotoha is distressed by her body's lack of sensation and the limits of being reanimated. 451 452 453

Near the end of the conflict, a beam of light restores her heartbeat and blood flow, ending her state as an Impure World Reincarnation body. She later remains among Ye Zi's companions and attends the wedding banquet with Nanako. 692 706 709

Kotoha begins as an eager, competitive fighter who openly tries to provoke Ye Zi into another spar. Although skilled and confident, she can be impulsive and is willing to put herself in danger to prove her worth. 30 31
