Background

Orochimaru found Ye Zi in the Land of Water. After regaining consciousness near the Land of Fire border, Ye Zi was taken toward Konoha by Orochimaru and Tsunade. Orochimaru made his survival conditional on proving his value, while Tsunade discovered abnormal cellular activity within his frail body. 4 24

Ye Zi entered Konoha's Ninja Academy in year 29 and graduated in year 32. He became Orochimaru's student, rapidly distinguishing himself through exceptional learning ability, three chakra natures, and an unusual physique capable of restoring his physical condition through food. 19 24

Konoha's surveillance and eventual willingness to hand him to Iwagakure after he killed a Stone official's offspring destroyed Ye Zi's trust in the village. He fled, but Danzō forced him into Root by threatening his life and exploiting the value of his sensory ability. 336

While in Root, Ye Zi pursued forbidden knowledge and became increasingly isolated after rumors spread that he ate human flesh. The rumor originated from his actions during wartime, when he resorted to it to protect Konoha's younger generation. 43 68 336

Personality

Ye Zi is composed under pressure and rarely lets fear, pain, or hostility visibly affect him. Even as a child threatened with death, he remained calm, and he later developed a habit of treating any person who posed a genuine threat as someone to be eliminated. 4 30

His central motivation was initially to return to Earth. This goal drove his fascination with techniques involving souls, summoning, space-time traversal, and forbidden research; it also made him willing to accept dangerous experimentation in exchange for strength. 43 68 79

Ye Zi is intensely pragmatic and can be ruthless toward enemies, but he is not wholly indifferent to others. He refused to abandon the injured Kotoha despite knowing that doing so would let him escape, and he became a serious, invested instructor to the children under his protection. 281 290
