Background

Qing Lin was born to an ordinary Snake People father and a human merchant mother. Both died soon after her birth. Raised among the Snake People, she was repeatedly abused for being half-human and half-snake, called a “monster” and “bastard,” and became afraid to meet others’ eyes or speak openly. Xiao Ding later took her in at the Ink Iron Mercenary Group's Stone Spring Oasis camp. 39

When Xiao Yan first met her, Qing Lin tried to conceal the pale green scales on her wrist out of shame. Xiao Yan instead regarded them as beautiful, while Xiao Ding and Xiao Li promised that she would be accepted and protected within the group. 39

Her confidence began changing after two mercenaries bullied her over her origins and destroyed herbs she had gathered for Xiao Yan. Xiao Yan punished them, treated her injuries with Clear Mark Ointment, and reaffirmed that she belonged with the Xiao brothers. 41

Appearance

Qing Lin was initially a slender, timid girl of about fifteen or sixteen, dressed in a repeatedly mended gray cloth dress and wearing her hair tied with a hemp rope. As her strength and circumstances changed, she adopted green outfits associated with her serpent lineage and eye technique. 39 154

Qing Lin begins as deeply shy, self-conscious, and dependent on those who show her kindness. Her childhood persecution makes her especially fearful of abandonment, but she is diligent and seeks ways to contribute, such as gathering medicinal herbs for Xiao Yan rather than becoming a burden. 39 41

She is compassionate toward Magical Beasts despite possessing the power to dominate them. After controlling the Jade-Eyed Poisonous Python, she purifies the sinister energy affecting it and resolves to treat it as a companion rather than a disposable weapon. 259

Her timidity gradually gives way to resolve. She repeatedly places herself in danger to protect Xiao Yan and her allies, communicates with the hostile Ancient Heavenly Serpent through empathy, and eventually develops into a core combatant who can act independently in critical battles. 42 262 269
