People on the streets had already fallen into Fear Illusions and begun slaughtering one another.
Seeing this, Dane hesitated no longer. After saying, "I'm leaving," he rose into the air and flew away.
He was so fast that he triggered a sonic boom as he shot straight into the sky.
Watching this, Damian couldn't help commenting, despite knowing it was somewhat inappropriate:
"Is flying one of the Justice League's entry requirements?"
Barbara shot him a glare, then looked worriedly at the computer screen.
Northern Ice Plant.
Superman had already knocked everyone unconscious, which surprised Batman.
He had thought everyone in the Justice League was as murderous as Dane.
But they soon discovered that Fear Gas was beginning to spread. Gordon had sent out a call for help.
Batman's expression darkened. The moment he saw Superman, he had already understood that this was no longer something he could resolve alone.
"Have you found an antidote to neutralize the gas?"
Hearing the question, Clark scratched the back of his head. "Huh?"
This guy was hopeless!
Batman sprinted forward a few steps and used his grappling gun to reach the rooftop.
Nightwing had Superman fly him up instead.
"This is really bad," Nightwing said gravely. Gotham was truly showing signs of being finished this time.
But suddenly, they saw a bolt of lightning rise from the ground into the sky.
Nightwing rubbed his eyes hard, his tone strange. "Did I just see that wrong?"
Batman's tone was stiff. "No."
Clark said happily, "It's Dane!"
Nightwing glanced sideways at him. "Dane?"
Realizing he had misspoken, Clark hurriedly corrected himself. "No, it's Shazam!"
Who exactly was it? Nightwing raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
Not long after that bolt of lightning rose into the sky, the clouds began to churn.
Soon, the sky had twisted into a massive vortex.
Like a dragon drawing water, it sucked the yellow gas from the ground into the sky.
A powerful low-pressure zone rapidly formed over central Gotham City, drawing the surrounding air toward its center.
The wind pressure rushing in from behind made Batman and Superman's capes snap violently.
The vortex spun faster and faster, and the yellow gas gathered in the sky at an even greater speed.
Within minutes, the sky was filled with poisonous clouds formed from Fear Gas.
Then thunder rumbled through the sky, and enormous bolts of lightning tore across the heavens.
What followed was an unceasing thunderstorm.
It was savage, violent, and filled with arrogant destructive power.
The massive lightning storm ripped apart the yellow clouds. The heat generated by the electrical energy vaporized them, completely destroying the gas's molecular structure.
As a result, the yellow in the sky dwindled, and the clouds grew thinner.
Finally, at a certain moment, the last patch of yellow cloud completely vanished.
But it was not over yet. There were still people in the city infected by the gas.
So, within the thunderclouds, Dane stirred the clouds, and the Power of Zeus erupted with unimaginable force.
A torrential downpour fell, and Dane crushed the neutralizing-agent capsule in his hand, scattering it into the rain clouds with a wave of his hand.
This was the true "Project Rain"!
Let God Decide His Fate
"I suddenly kind of believe that he really is a god."
Standing beneath the downpour, Batman looked solemnly toward the horizon.
Commanding wind and rain, with lightning at his side—what else could he be but a god?
This was also Clark's first time seeing Dane use his abilities in this manner. He had always thought Dane was a god of battle.
"There's some kind of medicine in the rain."
A few drops inevitably fell into his mouth in the heavy rain. Nightwing tasted it and noticed the difference.
"This must be the antidote to Fear Gas. So he was involved from the very beginning."
Batman was displeased. Dane had claimed he would not interfere, but he had been fooling them all along.
But then his expression abruptly changed. If Dane had been involved from the start, then through whom had he been involved?
And by what means?
During his earlier interrogation of the Mercenaries, he had learned that the Arkham Knight had taken Poison Ivy away. She apparently was unaffected by Fear Gas.
Like Jason, Batman quickly realized that Poison Ivy's physical traits could be used to create an antidote for the gas.
The Arkham Knight and Dane were working together!
Batman abruptly turned to Superman. Clark was startled by his serious expression.
"What's wrong?"
"The Arkham Knight is one of you?"
"The Arkham Knight? Who's that?"
Clark was utterly confused. Come on, how could Dane possibly include him in a plan that required thinking?
Batman quickly came to the same realization. Gritting his teeth, he said, "What a cunning bastard!"
"Um, what exactly are you talking about?"
Nightwing was completely lost. Had he been away from Gotham for too long?
It felt like he could no longer understand so many things.
Batman explained:
"A new figure has appeared in Gotham City, calling himself the Arkham Knight."
"When I found him, he was slaughtering Mercenaries on the streets. I stopped him."
"Did he hurt any innocent people?"
Batman stared at him sternly. "No. What are you trying to say?"
"I'm saying, could he have been helping?"
Nightwing shrugged. "After all, Gotham's streets are currently full of nothing but villains, scum, and Mercenaries who kill like it's nothing."
"We can't kill people!" Batman still insisted.
"But you haven't punished them either!"
Nightwing had plenty to say about that. He had once been in a relationship with Barbara, but it had ended without result because of Batman.
"Have you forgotten what happened to Barbara?"
Batman's expression changed. Barbara's paralysis was a pain he was unwilling and afraid to mention, because he knew it was his fault.
And besides...
"Right, Barbara!"
Batman turned, intending to interrogate the criminals below.
Then Clark suddenly scratched his head and said, "Miss Barbara is at Wayne Manor."
Batman nearly slipped and fell. He turned around and grabbed Clark by the collar.
"You're telling the truth?"
"Wait, Bruce, you actually lost Barbara!"
Nightwing was deeply dissatisfied. Though he and Barbara had broken up, he still cared about her.
Batman ignored him entirely. He immediately contacted the Manor and finally got through to Alfred.
"Thank heavens, Master Wayne. You're finally safe."
"Alfred, is Barbara with you?"
"Please rest assured, Miss Barbara is safe. She is here. Master Damian rescued her."
"Master Damian? Who is that?"
Alfred dropped a bombshell.
"Master Damian is your biological son, sir."
Batman was certain that his brain had crashed for a moment.
Nightwing beside him was stunned as well.
Then Alfred carefully explained the entire sequence of events, making Batman frown deeply.
How was this matter connected to Dane again? That guy knew far too much, didn't he?
Batman did not trust Dane, and by extension, he did not particularly trust this son who had suddenly appeared either.
Then he suddenly remembered: where was the Arkham Knight at a time like this?
He slapped his forehead. He had failed to connect the dots for a moment—his purpose was already written in his name!
"Dick, return to Wayne Manor with Superman and protect Barbara. And keep an eye on that person named Damian."
"You suspect he isn't your son?" Nightwing couldn't help asking.
Batman did not answer. He spread his cape and glided away.
Fortunately, the rain had weakened, or he might not have been able to fly at all.
Superman and Nightwing looked at each other. In the end, they decided to follow Batman's suggestion.
Batman's destination was Arkham Asylum.
He was extremely familiar with this place. It could be said that aside from the criminals imprisoned here, Batman was the person most familiar with Arkham.
When Batman landed on the roof of Arkham Asylum, he quickly noticed that something was wrong. The guards had all been taken down!
He hurried down to inspect them. His lenses scanned their body temperatures and heart rates. Thankfully, they had merely been anesthetized.
This showed that the other party had shown some restraint. Though Batman did not want to admit it, he was certain that the person was not utterly evil.
But he was very worried about the situation inside. After all, those people were basically all deranged serial killers.
Given the Arkham Knight's methods, there probably would not be many survivors.
Since the guards had already been dealt with, he was able to enter the asylum without obstruction.
Soon, he saw the first corpse.
It was the Mad Hatter. The gunshot wound was in his forehead, and he had died from a single shot.
He continued onward and found the second victim: Hugo Strange. With a surname like that, he sounded like a doctor.
And indeed he was. He was a psychologist at Arkham Asylum.
Any psychiatrist who worked in a place like this had to be sick themselves.
Hugo enjoyed playing Batman and had impersonated him many times to "fight for justice."
Then he would use the people he captured for experiments or abuse. Now, he too had been shot in the head.
