Background / History
Clark was sent from Krypton to Earth and found by Jonathan and Martha Kent in October 1980. Raised in Smallville, Kansas, he regarded Earth as his home despite not understanding his origins. Before adopting the Superman identity, he hid his abilities and struggled to find others like himself. 4
He first met Dane while rescuing workers from a collapsing oil rig. Clark stayed behind to support the platform so the evacuation could finish, and Dane joined him to bear its weight. Although Clark could not yet consciously fly, he instinctively discovered the ability during a later sparring session with Dane. 2 4
Dane brought Clark to a Kryptonian research ship, where Clark activated Jor-El's digital consciousness with the key from his escape craft. Jor-El explained Krypton's history, the destruction of the planet, and the rigid system that assigned every Kryptonian a role from birth. He encouraged Clark to embrace free will and gave him the blue suit and red cape bearing the House of El's symbol of hope. 5 6
Clark joined Dane's effort to establish the Justice League, initially traveling to Gotham to approach Batman. He later became one of the League's central figures and its second-in-command, though his duties repeatedly complicated his personal life with Lois Lane. 6 234
Appearance
Clark wears a blue Kryptonian bodysuit with a red cape and the House of El's “S” emblem after receiving it from Jor-El. 6
- Blue battle suit beneath his civilian clothing. 12 19
- Red cape. 6
- “S” crest representing hope in Kryptonian culture. 6
- His eyes glow red while using Heat Vision. 179 192
Personality
Clark is compassionate, earnest, and instinctively protective. Before knowing Dane, he endangered himself to keep an oil-rig evacuation safe; later, he assisted Jason Todd and his mother and sought to avoid civilian casualties even while overwhelmed by Kryptonian soldiers. 2 8 191
His early uncertainty about Krypton and Zod reflects a strong conscience rather than divided loyalty. He does not want Earth to suffer because of his people, but initially struggles with the prospect of fighting them. Jor-El's teachings about free will help him commit to protecting Earth. 3 6
Clark can be naïve and inexperienced, especially in combat and strategy. He often relies on overwhelming physical ability, holds back against opponents, and can be manipulated by more calculating allies or enemies. However, he learns quickly under pressure, adapting to blindness during battle and using his opponents' super-hearing against them. 4 180 347
His relationship with Lois makes him deeply protective—at times excessively so. Her pregnancy becomes an anchor that helps him resist the Mother Box's corruption. 241 246
Abilities & Skills
Kryptonian Physiology
Under a yellow sun, Clark possesses immense physical capabilities and can accumulate solar energy over time. Dane estimates that, after roughly thirty years of solar exposure, Clark could theoretically defeat ten Kryptonians in direct combat. 25
- Extreme strength sufficient to support a collapsing oil-rig platform and shatter asteroids in combat. 2 179
- Exceptional durability; conventional firearms do not affect him, and Kalibak struggles to breach his defenses even with immense force. 24 362
- Supersonic flight, first consciously unlocked during his spar with Dane. 4
- Rapid recovery under yellow sunlight. 363
- Can fight and maneuver in space. 179
- Can project a protective bio-field, including around Lois while carrying her in flight. 237 489
Super Senses
Clark possesses enhanced vision and hearing, though he usually relies primarily on sight for orientation. 2 346
- Uses Heat Vision to destroy incoming projectiles, sever restraints, and engage hostile Kryptonians. 179 246
- Can hear distant conversations, allowing him to locate or overhear people across a city. 446
- Uses X-ray vision to locate objects, including the Mother Box. 330
- Retained enough sensory awareness to fight after being temporarily blinded by Constantine's curse. 347
Combat Adaptation
Clark begins with limited formal technique but develops tactical instincts through repeated high-level battles. 4
- Learns to fly instinctively in the middle of a sparring match. 4
- Evades Wonder Woman's Sword of Vulcan after sensing that it could harm him. 12
- Defeats Doomsday Superman and Super Doom while blind by exploiting their super-hearing. 347
- Conserves energy and uses Apokolips' terrain to overcome Kalibak. 362
Weaknesses
- Magic — Ordinary magical forces may not injure him, but Zeus's lightning can. 4
- Kryptonite — A major Kryptonian weakness; Batman later uses Kryptonite-radiation handcuffs to restrain Kryptonian captives. 25 347
- Red sunlight — Prevents him from replenishing solar energy and eventually reduces him to mortal condition once stored energy is exhausted. 25
- Kryptonian atmosphere — The environment aboard Kryptonian vessels significantly weakens him. 178
- Energy depletion — Extended battles without sunlight, particularly on Apokolips, exhaust him. 362 363
- Mental influence — He is vulnerable to artifacts such as the Pandora's Box and Anti-Life Equation, though Lois and his unborn child strengthen his resistance. 237 246 355
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kryptonian suit — Blue bodysuit and red cape provided by Jor-El. 6
- Kryptonian wristband — Used to contact Cortana and teleport to Dane during the conflict with Zod. 179
- Kryptonite-radiation handcuffs — Used by Batman to restrain defeated Kryptonians; not Clark's personal equipment. 347
Relationships
- Dane / SHAZAM — First superhuman friend and mentor figure. Dane introduces Clark to Kryptonian heritage, helps him prepare for Zod, and later revives him with sun-god power. 2 4 6 363
- Jor-El — Biological father whose digital consciousness teaches Clark Krypton's history, free will, and the meaning of the House of El symbol. 5 6
- Martha Kent — Adoptive mother who welcomes Dane to the Kent farm. 4
- Jonathan Kent — Adoptive father; his insistence on secrecy shaped Clark's cautious early life. 5
- Lois Lane — Romantic partner and mother of Clark's unborn child. Their relationship is strained by his secret identity and hero duties, but Lois helps bring him back from corruption. 213 237 241 355
- Batman / Bruce Wayne — Justice League ally whose suspicion of superhumans creates recurring tension. Batman comforts Clark after a traumatic incident but later confronts him over the damage caused while corrupted. 116 356
- Wonder Woman / Diana — Justice League ally. Clark recognizes her sword as a genuine threat and later fights alongside her in major League conflicts. 12 345
- General Zod — Fellow Kryptonian and enemy seeking to rebuild Krypton at Earth's expense. Their conflict forces Clark to choose Earth. 3 179
- Lex Luthor / Alexander Luthor — Antagonist who investigates Clark's connection to Lois, manipulates public fear of Superman, and eventually learns his identity. 235 237 241
- Orion — Temporary ally during the Apokolips campaign; Clark accepts Dane's decision to cooperate with him. 370
