"The body was indeed dead, but its soul might not be."
Mictlantecuhtli had a soul as well—or a divine soul, if that was what one preferred to call it. In any case, that part was difficult to destroy.
It had some tricks up its sleeve. Even the Sword of Vulcan had failed to destroy its soul.
"Where did it hide?"
Diana frowned. She had not sensed anything at all.
"Here."
Dane clenched his hand around the Wizard Staff.
He brought the white magical crystal atop the staff close to the god of death's corpse. The crystal glowed faintly, as though it were conveying some information to him.
As the current Shazam, Dane naturally understood what the staff meant.
He then pointed the staff at the Obsidian Spear lying unattended nearby.
The crystal suddenly burst with light.
"Found you!"
The god of death's soul had been hiding inside the obsidian, and it seemed to sense that something was wrong.
A tiny crack suddenly opened in the obsidian, and a cluster of black mist appeared to be trying to escape.
But how could Dane possibly give it that chance?
He aimed the crystal at the obsidian. Driven by divine power, it released a dazzling white light that engulfed the obsidian.
Strike while the iron was hot and finish it off!
It might have been able to resist when it was still intact, but its half-crippled divine soul was no match for the staff now.
The god of death's power and divinity were directly absorbed by the staff. Poor Mictlantecuhtli had its consciousness erased before it could even let out a scream.
Dane withdrew the staff. A trace of floating black vapor now drifted within its white crystal—the Power of Death.
"You took its power?"
Diana was not completely ignorant. She could still see what had happened.
"The Power of Death is quite rare. It might come in handy someday."
Dane did not hide it from her and explained it plainly.
Diana fell into thought. Dane had told her about Kryptonians before. The power of the Old Gods could indeed be considered a force that restrained them.
Kryptonians possessed immense strength, invulnerable bodies, and super speed.
None of those abilities was especially remarkable on its own, but together, they were extremely troublesome.
Even if Wonder Woman's Sword of Vulcan could kill them, two fists could not beat four hands.
"What are you planning to make?"
At Diana's question, Dane suddenly recalled the dagger Zod used to stab people in the kidneys in Man of Steel and The Flash.
That concealed weapon was downright devious. What if they gave him a taste of his own medicine? Wouldn't that be interesting?
So he smiled and said,
"I'm going to make a very despicable weapon!"
With that, he struck the ground with his staff. The altar tiles immediately cracked apart, revealing the void-like dark world beneath.
"Let's go."
As he spoke, he naturally took Diana's hand, and the two vanished in an instant.
The altar collapsed with a thunderous crash. Without the god of death to sustain it, this sanctuary of the last Aztec god faded away forever...
Meanwhile, while Dane and Diana were eliminating the ancient Aztec god of death,
Constantine and Batman had also found one of Belial's competitors.
Though saying they had found it was not entirely accurate. In truth, the demon's side had found them first.
The process had not been pleasant, however.
On the outskirts of the city, Constantine and Batman were fleeing in disarray.
Behind them was a pack of hellhounds, their bodies wreathed in ominous flames and so gaunt they looked like skin stretched over bones.
"Tell me, why aren't you using that damn missile to blast them to hell?"
Batman gave him a strange look. "Do you lead with your trump card when you play cards?"
"Of course. That's called catching them off guard!"
Constantine rolled his eyes, though he understood what Batman meant.
But this body of his was nowhere near as battle-hardened as Batman's. He was about to collapse.
"We'll both die like this!"
"We won't." Batman looked up. "At least not today."
Constantine looked up as well, and delight appeared on his face. The Batwing had returned!
But the Vulcan Cannon's ammunition was not unlimited.
In fact, most of the Batwing's ammunition had already been used up when they killed Belial.
So after wiping out a group of hellhounds, the Batwing's cannons fell silent.
"Damn it, do you have any other tricks?"
Batman said nothing, but his calm demeanor infected Constantine, giving him enough leisure to take a drag from his cigarette.
Sure enough, not long after the aircraft's guns went silent, its rear hatch suddenly opened.
Then a massive black shadow dropped from inside.
With a thunderous crash, the huge mass of steel crushed several hellhounds that had run too close.
Constantine's eyes widened when he saw that it was a car.
A Bat-shaped heavy armored vehicle. Yes, it was actually a fucking armored vehicle!
Batman walked over, and the Batmobile's doors unfolded as though welcoming its master.
Constantine hurried after him and quipped,
"Now I know why an ordinary human like you dares hang around a bunch of 'gods.'"
"Is your superpower being rich?"
Batman paused, then told him in a very serious tone,
"I'm very rich."
Constantine gave him the finger.
Batman gripped the steering wheel and slammed his foot on the accelerator.
The Batmobile let out a violent roar, sending adrenaline surging through both of them.
"Now. My. Turn!"
The heavy armored vehicle accelerated from a standstill. Its thick armor rammed straight into the hellhounds, smashing every creature that dared block its path into organic fragments.
Its heavy tires ground over bones and blood with a teeth-grinding crunch, but Constantine's blood boiled at the sound.
"I fucking love this car!"
Batman replied coolly, "It's not for sale."
After running over every hellhound, a figure suddenly appeared ahead of the car. It did not look human.
It had four glowing red eyes and a pair of huge wings on its back, perfectly fitting the image of a demon.
Batman reacted quickly and immediately activated the weapon system.
The Batmobile's cannon extended and fired a shot directly at the demon.
But when the smoke cleared, the demon was completely unharmed.
"This demon is far higher-ranked than the hellhounds. You'll need magic to hurt it!"
"Then what are you waiting for?"
As Batman spoke, he maneuvered the heavy armored vehicle around the demon.
Seeing that Batman truly refused to use the Eternal Gold Missile, Constantine could only grit his teeth and cast a spell.
He chanted another long string of incomprehensible incantations.
Just as the demon tried to stop the Batmobile with both hands, a gigantic angel made of flames appeared before it.
The Flame Angel drew the massive sword from its back and swung it down at the demon.
A wall of fire rapidly formed along the path of the blade, and everywhere it passed was engulfed in holy flames.
The trail of fire seemed to have a mind of its own as it pursued the demon.
Chapter 42: The Man Who Fucked an Entire City
"Not bad," the demon commented.
But it easily dodged the Flame Angel's strike. After all, this was an angel formed from magic and possessed no intelligence.
Besides, Constantine was not particularly compatible with holy magic.
"Next time, I hope you can use something with a little more punch." Batman was dissatisfied with his performance.
"Then do you have any better suggestions?" Constantine shot back irritably.
"Do you know what I found in that missile?" Batman asked calmly.
"What else could it be besides Eternal Metal?"
Batman: ...
Constantine snickered. Served him right for acting so damn cool all day.
But Batman quickly recovered. "Either way, I took it apart."
Constantine stared at him in shock as if he were looking at a madman.
"We only have one!"
"I only took out a small amount of Eternal Metal and mixed it into my Batarangs."
As he spoke, he took a Batarang from his belt. It looked rather weighty.
"I need you to buy me an opening."
As a seasoned schemer, Constantine quickly understood Batman's intentions.
He immediately controlled the Flame Angel to pursue the demon.
But his magical power was limited and could not sustain this for long.
It should be mentioned that although Constantine had studied many different schools of magic and possessed exceptional mastery over dark magic,
he rarely used magic in practice. Most of the time, he solved problems through deception.
First, he understood that using magic often came at a terrible price, so he avoided it whenever possible.
Second, although Constantine was highly talented, the magic within him was not particularly abundant—at least, not enough to compare with most demons.
"You might want to hurry up."
Constantine squeezed every bit of potential from himself, but he still could not stop his magic and stamina from draining away rapidly.
At that moment, Batman found his chance and threw the Batarang in his hand.
The Batarang stuck firmly to the demon's body like glue.
It looked down at the blue-glowing Batarang, seemingly unable to understand what it was.
But after a few beeps, the Batarang suddenly exploded. The demon, which blades and swords could scarcely harm, was suddenly wounded.
Bright red blood, just like human blood, flowed from its body.
