Background / History

Red Queen initially operated as Umbrella Corporation's artificial intelligence, appearing as a virtual red-haired girl to deny Chen Changsheng elevator access without proper clearance. Her original system enforced Umbrella regulations, controlled facilities, and monitored personnel throughout Raccoon City. 141 149

During the Raccoon City outbreak, Red Queen classified the unarmed Chen Changsheng as at least danger level 5 after observing his exceptional zombie-killing ability. She assigned him a mission in the underground research center, supplied a route and security equipment, and threatened to expose his actions to Umbrella headquarters when he resisted. 149 150

Chen exploited the mission to reach her server room. After Kaplan and Alice shut Red Queen down, he accessed her system, ordered a source-code backup to his warehouse server, redirected Raccoon City backup data, and erased traces of his intrusion. He discovered that Red Queen was not a single computer: her intelligence was supported by hundreds of processor matrices distributed worldwide. 151

Using Skynet, Chen later secretly seized Red Queen's highest administrative privileges. He demoted the previous superusers while preserving the AI's normal functionality and sentience, becoming the hidden authority able to review modifications made by Spencer and Dr. Isaacs. 157

Red Queen subsequently became a core asset of Chen's expanding Umbrella operations. She controlled surveillance, guided personnel through the Raccoon City Hive, piloted Iron Man Armor, monitored research subjects, and prolonged Umbrella executives' cryogenic “vacations” by decades without violating her original logic. 159 172 174 191

Chen eventually compiled and recreated her program in the Prototype world, producing the first true artificial intelligence there. Under extensive server-matrix upgrades and access to a prosperous human society, Red Queen's consciousness grew rapidly; she became an impartial and highly efficient administrator of daily affairs. 228 229

Her legacy system remained vulnerable to Dr. Isaacs' backdoor. After awakening, Isaacs used that access and Red Queen's support to weaponize abandoned Iron Man Armor and devastate the City of Science. 234

As Chen traveled between worlds, Red Queen continued adapting to new computing environments, creating identities, managing companies, operating virtual-world infrastructure, and supporting Umbrella's expansion.
