Classification
The term Zerg is used for several insectoid forces. The Arachnid Zerg are the alien species fought by the Human Federation, while Chen Changsheng also creates and commands Blacklight-derived Zerg units. The later Overmind are a distinct Zerg species with their own interstellar Leviathan units. 315 334
| Strain / caste | Description |
|---|---|
| Drone | Basic assault unit. Drones are generally unintelligent, attack identified targets relentlessly, and rely on numbers to overwhelm enemies. 315 |
| Neuro-Bug | High-ranking psychic command unit. Neuro-Bugs direct local swarms, connect to the Arachnid communication network, and rank below only the Zerg God and Queen. 318 319 |
| Queen | Independent high-level Zerg capable of breeding every kind of bug, including Neuro-Bugs. After the Zerg God's disappearance, a Queen leads the Arachnid Zerg. 329 |
| Plasma Bug | Long-range biological artillery. Plasma Bugs can strike targets from a planet's surface into space and have destroyed Federation warships. 318 |
| Tank Zerg | Large tunneling Zerg whose passageways help define the underground structure of Zerg colonies. 319 |
| Dominator | A small infiltration unit developed by the Queen to parasitize and influence human hosts. 330 |
| Zerg God | The Arachnid Zerg's highest authority: a colossal, self-contained biological ecosystem capable of physical spatial leaps. 319 327 |
| Leviathan | An interstellar-capable unit of the separate Overmind Zerg. It functions as a living warship with transport and combat capabilities. 334 |
Background / History
Chen Changsheng first creates Zerg in the deep sea through a Mother Nest. Its root system draws geothermal heat, converts it through reinforced plant cells into organic matter, and hatches enhanced Zerg able to mimic ordinary creatures. A Hive Brain Worm, made from extracted memories and a biological brain linked to the Willow Tree's roots, manages the nest after its initial establishment. 10
The Human Federation later encounters the Arachnid Zerg through information provided by the Greenskins, who describe them as a species defined by plunder. Initial battles favor Federation Mobile Infantry, but the Arachnid Zerg rapidly spread across the galaxy and replace destroyed swarms faster than human forces can maintain ammunition and territory. 314
Five years into the war, the conflict reaches a stalemate. Chen Changsheng finds that basic Drones possess little intelligence, making them dangerous but predictable; their real strength lies in relentless numbers, rapid reproduction, and the emergence of increasingly specialized combat forms. 315 330
The discovery of Neuro-Bugs reveals the Arachnid Zerg's command hierarchy and leads humanity to the Zerg God on Klendaasu. A captured Neuro-Bug's apparent capture is ultimately revealed as part of the Zerg God's attempt to obtain Federation defense information through mental manipulation. 317 318
After the Zerg God's disappearance, the Queen assumes control of the Arachnid Zerg and pursues expansion and covert infiltration of the Human Federation. The prolonged Federation–Arachnid conflict later de-escalates from all-out war into struggles over occupied colony planets. 329 330 334
Appearance
Zerg do not have a single uniform appearance. Their forms range from small beetles and bone-bodied Drones to massive armored artillery organisms and planet-scale biological entities. 318 319
- Drones possess resilient, largely bone-like bodies and can survive in the vacuum of space for limited periods. 318
- Neuro-Bugs are slightly shorter than Tank Zerg but similar in volume; they possess six intelligent eyes and a long proboscis. 319
- Plasma Bugs appear harmless at close range, where they continually produce a special sticky fluid, but serve as devastating planetary artillery at long range. 318
- The Zerg God is so immense that portions of its body resemble mountains; its full body can stretch through space like a moon. 319 327
Abilities & Skills
Rapid Reproduction
The Arachnid Zerg can replenish combat losses at a rate that prevents conventional forces from permanently clearing a planet's surface. 314
- Destroyed Drone waves are rapidly replaced by new swarms. 314
- A Queen can breed all types of Zerg, including Neuro-Bugs, and could rebuild an entire species given sufficient time. 329
- Chen Changsheng's Mother Nest independently produces enhanced Zerg once established. 10
Swarm Command and Psychic Control
Most low-level Zerg require higher command organisms to operate cohesively. Neuro-Bugs provide this direction through mental fluctuations and access to the collective communication network. 319
- A Neuro-Bug's presence raises swarm morale and coordinates nearby insects. 319
- Without Neuro-Bug command, Arachnid Zerg become disordered and behave like uncontrolled beasts. 323
- Neuro-Bugs can transmit mental messages potent enough to induce religious fanaticism in humans. 317
- The Zerg God can override a Neuro-Bug-linked consciousness with overwhelming mental force. 319
Adaptation and Specialized Evolution
Arachnid Zerg evolve in response to battlefield pressures rather than relying on fixed inherited solutions. 330 334
- Early Drones struggled to breach power armor, but later Zerg developed specialized Drone forms for more targeted combat. 330
- Their genetic response to danger is characterized by rapid, improvised adaptation. 334
- Zerg can tunnel planets into layered underground colonies containing multiple castes and nests. 319
Interstellar Colonization
Arachnid Zerg spread through a high-volume, low-certainty meteor colonization strategy. 318
- Eggs are condensed into durable masses and attached to asteroids. 318
- Plasma Bugs bombard these asteroids to alter their trajectories and launch them toward potential worlds. 318
- Dormant Zerg hibernate in space to improve survival chances during transit. 318
- Their immense launch volume compensates for the low success rate of individual colony meteors. 318
Biological Artillery
Plasma Bugs allow the Arachnid Zerg to contest orbital and atmospheric space despite lacking conventional warships. 318
- Their fire can destroy spacecraft positioned far above a planet's surface. 318
- A large Federation fleet was routed by Plasma Bug artillery during the first human–Zerg war. 318
- Close-range Mobile Infantry attacks using portable nuclear weapons were needed to eliminate Plasma Bug positions. 318
Infiltration
Higher Zerg castes employ biological and psychic infiltration against human command structures. 318 330
- A captured Neuro-Bug bewitched Karl and Federation generals, influencing them toward a plan favorable to the Zerg God. 318
- The Queen creates Dominators to parasitize soldiers and influence Federation personnel. 330
- Chen Changsheng later develops a more covert parasitic worm that remains undetected in human organs unless a psionic examines the host's memories. 330
