Commander Edmund stood atop the wall without speaking to his deputies. He even chose to ignore the strategic map hanging to one side.
His eyes remained fixed on something in his hand that looked remarkably like an air-conditioner remote.

The Guard Captain responsible for tracking down the missing core spoke in quick succession.
Every Industrial Core was unique. An unforgeable code had been written into each one from the moment production began.
For ease of management, the code was not engraved on the core. Instead, it was stored in a small box resembling a transmitter-receiver.
The box was firmly embedded inside the core. Whenever the core was disturbed, it automatically sent out a signal.
However, the fog had previously blocked the signal too strongly, so the transmitter-receiver could only roughly determine that it was somewhere in the western suburbs.
But at noon today, the core had sent out another signal.
