Background / History
Sky Demons are creatures that emerge when portions of the Sky Demon Realm intersect with reality. Such intersections occur alongside abnormal earth veins and reversed magnetic fields; the manifested areas are designated Demon Nests. Humans cannot actively enter the Sky Demon Realm under normal circumstances and instead encounter it passively through these incursions. 8
Folklore concerning man-eating temple demons and monsters that preyed upon human vitality dates back roughly a thousand years. After the founding of Great Chu, the founding emperor's research identified the source world and named it the Sky Demon Realm, describing its inhabitants as “enemies from beyond the heavens” whose demonic thoughts sow discord. 8
The prevailing understanding of the Sky Demon Realm was later overturned. It is not merely Earth's “dark side,” but a super-planetary aggregate formed from the convergence of countless worlds. It grows by plundering, invading, assimilating, and ultimately devouring other worlds; Earth has been under its attention for approximately a millennium. 669
The precise origin of Sky Demons remains unresolved. One mainstream Great Chu theory proposes a connection between Sky Demons and demonic cultivators who transform themselves through rituals, but humanity has explored less than ten percent of the Sky Demon Realm and lacks definitive proof. 234
Classification
By Nature
| Type | Characteristics | Documented Countermeasures |
|---|---|---|
| Solid-type | Possess physical bodies, immense strength, and generally cruel dispositions. They possess both body and soul. 12 463 | True Qi, Martial Will, specialized weapons, and anti-demon firearms can damage them. 389 |
| Ethereal-type | Formless and invisible entities capable of directly controlling a victim's body; ordinary people are especially vulnerable. 12 | Martial Will can detect them in advance. 12 |
| Concept-type | Rare, formless entities that parasitize concepts such as malice, faith, and devotion; they can corrupt faith or turn Martial Will into obsession. 573 | Spirit power, Intent Manifestation, and spirit-harming True Martial artifacts can affect them. 600 601 700 |
| Void-type | A designation used for Sky Demons whose vital Core is their key weakness, often located at the brow. 392 | Destroying the Core; their remains may yield valuable cores rather than True Spirits. 388 392 |
By Threat Level
| Rank | Approximate Human Equivalent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Sky Demon | Third to ninth gate of Blood Essence cultivation | Specialized firearms can injure them outside Demon Nests, though ordinary people remain at near-certain risk. 269 389 |
| Middle Sky Demon | First Great Limit Martial Artist | Their True Spirits or Cores can be worth over one million credits. 269 388 |
| Upper Sky Demon | Second Great Limit Martial Artist | A peak Upper Sky Demon can rapidly kill a similarly ranked martial artist; anti-demon bullets are ineffective against them. 391 |
| Great Demon | Above the Upper rank | Includes powerful Demon Nest lords and entities requiring high-level martial artists to suppress. 269 512 |
| Sky Demon Commander | Five Limits Venerable to Six Limits Heavenly King | Regional rulers of Sky Demons; Nine-Tailed Great Demons are cited as an example. 512 |
| Sky Demon General | Requires a Great Sage to suppress | Flood Dragon Demons are classified at this level. 512 |
| Sky Demon Marshal | Apex-level entity within the known hierarchy | Entities such as Mountain Whispers command vast numbers of Sky Demons. 512 |
| Demon God | Far beyond ordinary Great Sages | Rulers of the Sky Demon Realm; their true bodies are prevented from descending directly by interrealm rules. 669 |
Characteristics
Sky Demon Force Field
Every Sky Demon possesses a distorted force field that both interferes with reality and protects the demon itself. This field can create mental pressure, disrupt movement, and shield its bearer from ordinary attacks. 8 12
- The field generally requires a First Great Limit Martial Artist's Will, True Qi, or demon-subduing technology to break. 8
- Steelbone Armor Gen 3 lets its user's hands pass through the field of lower-level Sky Demons. 93
- Special anti-demon bullets can penetrate lower-tier fields outside a Demon Nest, but are ineffective against Middle Sky Demons and stronger targets. 389
- Demonic cultivators can imitate or borrow this defense through the Sky Demon Force Field, a practice Dragon Nine considers indistinguishable from becoming a Sky Demon. 185 186
Emotional and Spiritual Predation
Sky Demons are believed to advance by feeding on human negative emotions, including fear, resentment, greed, jealousy, grief, and despair. Strong emotional fluctuations are treated as nourishment. 24 440
- Weaker, unintelligent Sky Demons instinctively avoid large crowds and their concentrated yang energy. 24
- Intelligent Sky Demons can ignore this instinct and use disguises or deception to lure prey. 24 56
- Sky Demon residue can destabilize the sanity of people below the Martial Artist level; sufficiently powerful Sky Demons may possess a host through only a small amount of flesh and blood. 13
- Concept-type Sky Demons can feed on and weaponize faith, devotion, and other spiritual concepts. 573
Possession and Transformation
Sky Demons can possess humans or cooperate with demonic cultivators, granting abnormal abilities at the cost of corruption and control. 13 439
- Possession by a Concept-type Sky Demon grants the host a phasing quality that makes physical attacks ineffective. 600
- Human followers may gain demonic abilities through “divine skills” bestowed by ethereal or conceptual Sky Demons; such powers commonly carry backlash and can be used to exploit the recipient. 439
- Certain demonic rituals allow practitioners to transform their bodies into true Sky Demons rather than merely undergoing localized mutation. 234
- The Demon Summoning Hall developed methods to borrow Sky Demon force fields and create Sky Demon bodies. 186
Intelligence and Behavior
Sky Demons vary widely in intelligence. Lesser specimens may act on instinct, while Great Demons can be more cunning than ordinary humans and will flee if victory is unlikely. 24 512
- Internal conflict is severe: weakness is not tolerated among Sky Demons. 102
- Sky Demons can be ruthless toward their own kind; a Nether Serpent was inferred to have killed another serpent from the strangulation damage on its skeleton. 523
- The Thousand-Headed Flood Dragon Demon attempted to recruit Meng Chuan after recognizing his combat ability. 187
- A free Sky Demon entering the human world may act cautiously while weakened, such as extending underground roots to build a mycelial network. 431
Demon Nests and Invasion
Demon Nests are portions of the Sky Demon Realm that collide with the human world. They serve as invasion bridgeheads and provide the environment in which Sky Demons grow, hide, and advance. 8 514 535
- Demon Nest conditions can suppress human abilities; technological equipment may malfunction inside them, and True Qi becomes a consumable resource. 392 514
- Dense demonic energy within stone-spire regions aids Sky Demon growth while limiting human perception. 514
- The strongest Great Demon in a nest is its Demon Nest Lord, whose strength determines the nest's demonic-energy concentration. 512
- Sky Demon Marshals are bound to their respective Demon Nests by interrealm rules; they seek to steal and convert human faith in order to eventually escape these restrictions. 512 534
- Great Chu has identified forty-seven worldwide Restricted Zones containing Sky Demons beyond the ability of even Great Sages to handle. 512
Materials and Remains
Sky Demon corpses are valuable sources of martial and technological materials. The type of remains depends on the demon's nature. 388 514
- True Spirit — A solid-type Sky Demon's spiritual remnant, comparable to a human Nascent Soul; used in True Martial forging, medicine, and cultivation. 388
- Demon Core — The principal material of void-type Sky Demons; often their only recoverable spoil. 388 524
- Body materials — Carapaces, stingers, teeth, hides, eyes, and similar parts may be used to make demon-subduing weapons. 514 516
- Some Sky Demon-derived bodies, including Withered Wood Puppets and certain Thorned Abominations, lack True Spirits and yield reduced rewards. 388
- A Rank 3 living battle armor such as Zhengning contains a Sky Demon True Spirit imprint that must be subdued before the armor can be controlled. 423

Trivia
- Great Chu's term “Sky Demon” refers specifically to creatures emerging from Demon Nests, rather than every demonic cultivator or mutated human. 8 234
- The appearance of a Level 4 Demon Nest is exceptionally dangerous; a prior Level 4 incident in Guiyun Province lasted over two months and transformed a mountainous region into a basin. 8
- Demon Nest hunters commonly follow an unspoken rule of taking only two valuable materials from a solid-type Sky Demon: its True Spirit and one additional high-value body part. 514
