Background

Ancient history

The Holy Demon Gate was founded nearly ten thousand years before the present era by an original Holy Lord who disappeared shortly afterward. Later Holy Lords appeared intermittently and were believed to be the founder's reincarnations; their reappearances historically plunged the Song Kingdom's martial world into turmoil 67.

At its height, the Gate's influence extended beyond the Song Kingdom. It was eventually condemned throughout the martial world as the foremost demonic sect, though its modern-era activity became notably restrained 67 68. Its reputation remained defined by atrocities attributed to its branches, including the refinement of living people into pills 83.

The false Holy Lord and reorganization

Lu Changfeng was mistaken for the Holy Lord because of the mark on his forehead. Rather than immediately reject the identity, he used it to secure the allegiance of Xuan Sha and the Dark Buddha Demonic Sect 68 78.

Under Lu Changfeng, the Gate expanded by incorporating or creating new subordinate sects. The Sword Kill Demonic Sect was founded from the Sikong family, while the Yanyue Sect was conquered and remade as the Yanyue Demonic Sect 101 107. He also introduced the Ten Great Demon Generals as elite direct subordinates of the Holy Lord 107.

The Demon Den Gathering exposed a conflict over the Holy Lord's identity when the Soul Suppressing Demonic Sect presented the dormant former Holy Lord, Yang Jing Tian. After the crisis, Lu Changfeng abolished the Gate Master position, destroyed the Soul Suppressing Demonic Sect's standing within the organization, and centralized authority beneath the Holy Lord 120 122.

Rise to state power

The reorganized Gate absorbed cities across Yunyang Prefecture and fielded a 50,000-man force led by mixed formations of Demonic Sect disciples 139. It later launched a coordinated assault on the Capital Region, overwhelming the Sunset Dynasty's defense and contributing to the fall of Song 182 184.

Following the conquest, Lu Changfeng established the Holy Kingdom from Holy City. A century later, after his prolonged absence, Shenghong assumed the Holy Lord title and renamed the organization the Holy Gate 185 198.

Demon Dens

Demon Den Gatherings were used to assign missions, test sect cohesion, and coordinate major actions. Only sects that completed their assigned tasks were normally permitted to attend 101.

Buddha Heart Pills

The Dark Buddha Demonic Sect refined captives into Buddha Heart Pills, sacred medicines capable of greatly accelerating cultivation. The Gate's assault on the Daliang delegation was conducted in part to obtain Demon Bloodline-bearing targets for pill refinement and other uses 68 95 96.

Demonic Bloodline inheritance

Lu Changfeng used his replication ability to test compatibility and transfer Ancient-grade Demonic Bloodlines to subordinate cultivators. This allowed figures such as Zi Long, Hua Zhuri, and Hua Yulong to obtain paths toward the Fetal Transformation Realm 103 124.

Letter Seed network

After reducing the Purple Lotus Demon to a remnant soul, Lu Changfeng integrated it with Letter Seeds and distributed the seeds among sect leaders. The resulting communication system allowed the Gate's factions to coordinate remotely through a dedicated chat group 122.

Lu Changfeng publicly proclaimed that the Gate was not a demonic sect and intended to restore its ancient glory. The proclamation was met with ridicule and hostility, but it marked a deliberate effort to reshape the organization's image 83.

Its territorial expansion produced mixed reactions. Rival sects and officials feared direct confrontation, while some residents of occupied cities found that Holy Demon Gate rule imposed less exploitation than the retreating martial armies 108 139.
