Around the long, low dining table sat Kakashi, Naruto, Jiraiya, the young Sasuke, Boruto, along with the master of the house, Tazuna, his daughter Tsunami, and his young grandson Inari, all gathered together and preparing to eat breakfast.

Though the family was poor, Tsunami had still done her best to put together a fairly plentiful meal: mostly sea fish prepared in various ways, cold seaweed salad, pickled side dishes, and a small bowl of steaming white rice in front of each person.

For the common people of the Land of Waves, who had been exploited by the Matsuo Group for years and lived in hardship, this was already the highest standard of hospitality.

Everyone began eating in silence. The atmosphere was somewhat heavy.

Naruto shoveled rice from his bowl, looking a little distracted, his gaze flicking now and then toward the staircase to the second floor.

Only the young Inari seemed not to fully understand the adults' worries yet. He ate his fish in small bites, curiously sizing up these foreign ninja.

Halfway through breakfast, faint footsteps came from the stairs.
