Background
Yao-Shaku-Sama originated as the cursed urban legend tied to the damaged Ksitigarbha statue of Arakawa Village. The legend claims that she approaches victims while making a “popopo” sound and curses anyone who looks at her 26.
By the time Uesugi Tetsu confronted her, Arakawa Village's decline and her fading remembrance had reduced her to an almost powerless spirit. Tetsu initially attacked her, then recognized that her apparent one-and-a-half-star rank was empty; she surrendered and voluntarily became his first Shikigami through the Ksitigarbha statue 41.
Her later growth became closely connected to Buddhist faith and Wish Power. Although she initially feared Buddhist temples because of the constraints imposed by her own legend, the incense offerings from her memorial tablet strengthened her instead, granting her Buddha light, affinity with others, and a path beyond her original supernatural-phenomenon nature 118 138.
Appearance
In her usual Two-Shaku form, she appears as a very small black-haired girl in a white hat and white dress, initially standing below Uesugi Tetsu's knees 41. Her appearance changes dramatically with her transformations.
- Two-Shaku form — Petite girl with black hair, a white hat, and white clothing 41.
- Yao-Shaku form — A giant manifestation used when confronting overwhelming Wish Power 203.
- Eight-Shaku Bodhisattva form — A tall white-clad figure capable of standing beside Uesugi Tetsu in an eight-shaku body 285.
- Hachishaku Nioh form — Black hair worn loose, a massive and muscular physique with a faint golden radiance, and the imposing presence of a Nioh 287.
- Eight-Shaku Master — Appears childlike despite her immense Ghost God-level power and wisdom 409.
Personality
Two-Shaku-Sama is initially childish, innocent, proud, and intensely eager to please Uesugi Tetsu. Her affection for him is genuine, but she is also cunning enough to stage incidents designed to win his sympathy or diminish perceived rivals 42 83.
She is prone to jealousy toward Tokugawa Ririko and other women close to Tetsu, yet she gradually learns social skills and develops a more functional relationship with Ririko 129 285. Her playful behavior—including an enthusiasm for games, snacks, travel, and imagined romantic scenarios—contrasts sharply with the burden she eventually accepts as a being sustained by faith and the wishes of others 118 150 374.
As her strength grows, she becomes more responsible and self-sacrificing. She protects Imagawa Yoshimoto, absorbs dangerous Wish Power to save her allies, creates clones to shelter civilians, and accepts the responsibility of a god despite the difficulty of the path 201 203 374 415.
Abilities & Skills
Curse Tracking
Two-Shaku-Sama can establish two-way observation with a target and track them continuously.
- Her initial tracking limit was one target; after promotion, it increased to two 138.
- She can identify a tracked target's location at range, even when blood scent is deliberately spread to obscure a trail 97.
- She uses her heart-string connection to coordinate with Uesugi Tetsu during operations 201.
Healing
Her healing abilities began as Mutual Healing and later developed into more powerful Buddhist healing.
- Mutual Healing — Embracing another person continuously heals both parties; the effect increases with the embraced person's Charisma 42.
- Her healing allows Uesugi Tetsu to recover from otherwise fatal injuries while holding her 86.
- Six-Syllable Great Bright Mantra (Incomplete) — Can heal physical injuries and purify spiritual or mental wounds without requiring eye contact 409.
Illusory Entity
Two-Shaku-Sama has no conventional vital points.
- Attacks reduce her HP rather than inflicting localized physical injury; she only dies when her HP reaches zero 42.
- This trait lets her endure dangerous roles that would be unsuitable for an ordinary Shikigami, including acting as a frontline shield 86 306.
- Her high HP, small size, and mobility made her an ideal wielder of the Life and Death Taiko 86.
Illusory Weapon
She can convert her remaining life force into imagined weapons and tools.
- The stronger or more complex the imagined weapon, the more life force it consumes 138.
- She has created movement devices, a hoverboard, binding bullets, shields, large platforms, and spears through this ability 153 166 179 306.
- Her illusory bullets can transform into ropes that restrain opponents rather than injuring them 153.
- Overuse visibly exhausts her, as shown when she creates a large floating platform 179.
Hachishaku Nioh
After completing Flesh Refining, Two-Shaku-Sama can enter a Nioh state built for close combat.
- Her physique and willpower roughly double, while her spear skill rises to near-expert proficiency 287.
- Her Protective Halo can incapacitate weak one-star opponents and significantly suppress ordinary three-star demons 287.
- The form initially lasts approximately fifteen minutes 287.
- She serves as Uesugi Tetsu's shield during the Seed Battle, blocking attacks that would have severely wounded him 306.
Tathagata's Storehouse and Clones
As Eight-Shaku Master, she possesses extraordinary innate spiritual potential through Tathagata's Storehouse.
- She can create multiple clones to assist in missions, though each individual clone has diminished aura and power 410 414.
- Her clones can locate endangered civilians, become protective mud statues, observe threats, and evacuate people 414 415.
- She uses these clones to protect children during the Asahikawa crisis while her main body addresses greater threats 415.
Ghost God Arts
Her Ghost God ascension grants advanced Buddhist techniques and faith-based powers.
- Wish Power Dharma Protector — Can use Ushioni, incense, Wish Power, and a principal deity to forge Dharma Protectors; their effects vary according to the materials and deity involved 409.
- Calamity Response Halo — Strengthens as she responds to and resolves tribulations; it also increases her affinity with those she protects 409 415.
- Myo-o — Consumes all remaining life force to enter a stronger Myo-o state 409.
- Her advanced body is described as a Pure Vajra Body, surpassing ordinary Ghost Gods in physical resilience 409.
Equipment & Vessels
- Ksitigarbha Statue — Her Shikigami vessel and the object through which she first contracted with Uesugi Tetsu 41.
- Memorial Tablet — Placed at Hongwanji Temple to receive Buddhist incense offerings and support her divine growth 118 138.
- Life and Death Taiko — A small hand drum Uesugi Tetsu gives her to disperse low-intelligence Chi and spirits 86.
- Pure White Doll — A Shiromuku-like blessed item she equips with thirty percent compatibility 131.
- Kaga Kiyomitsu — Temporarily entrusted to her during her battle against the Red Oni 166.
Relationships
- Uesugi Tetsu — Master and first contractor. She is fiercely devoted to him, relies on their mental connection, and repeatedly risks herself to protect him 41 201 203.
- Tokugawa Ririko — Initially a romantic rival whom Two-Shaku-Sama tries to undermine; their relationship later becomes more cooperative, though tension remains 83 129 285 287.
- Imagawa Yoshimoto — An ally placed under Two-Shaku-Sama's protection during the Nishio Castle operation 201.
- Nure-onna — Fellow Shikigami and game-playing companion 118 126.
- Hiyori Bō — Fellow Shikigami who helps welcome her into Nanjō Emi's group of Shikigami 118.
- Shiraishi — Companion whose relationship with her improves during their time in the Sengoku period 174.
- Karuta — Assists Two-Shaku-Sama with managing incense offerings and teaches her practical techniques 365.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arakawa Ghost Village

Kisaragi Station and Early Support
She becomes Tetsu's primary healer, tracker, and support unit. She helps disperse Chi with the Life and Death Taiko, withstands a train impact to create an opening for Tetsu, and develops the confidence to take active combat roles 86 133.
Buddhist Promotion and Sengoku Service
Buddhist incense offerings promote her to Rare+ and two stars. In the Sengoku period, she learns to use Illusory Weapon creatively, defeats a two-and-a-half-star Red Oni with Kaga Kiyomitsu, and becomes known as Onmyoji Tetsu's Shikigami 138 153 166.
Nishio Castle and Wish Power Crisis
Assigned to protect Imagawa Yoshimoto and guard the Key of History, she absorbs a torrent of corrupted Wish Power to save her allies. The power destabilizes her, forcing Uesugi Tetsu to seal her in the Ksitigarbha statue for her protection 201 203 204.
Eight-Shaku Bodhisattva
Uesugi Tetsu enters her recurring nightmare within the Ksitigarbha statue, repeatedly saves her and her brother from past suffering, and defeats the will controlling the loop. Two-Shaku-Sama then absorbs the purified Wish Power and becomes Eight-Shaku Bodhisattva 283 284.
Heavenly Path and Ghost God Ascension

Trivia
- Her original legend's “popopo” sound remains part of her speech pattern 26 41.
- She was initially afraid of Buddhist sites because supernatural phenomena are constrained by the stories that created them 118.
- Rather than being weakened by Buddhism, Buddhist incense offerings became the foundation of her promotion path 138.
- She studies social skills and dark psychology, applying both to improve her relationship with Ririko and pursue Uesugi Tetsu's affection 129.
- Her shrine's relocation to the countryside increased both her number of believers and her workload 364.
