Background / History

Tom Riddle and Hogwarts

Under the name Tom Marvolo Riddle, Voldemort attended Hogwarts as a Slytherin prefect. Fifty years before the main story, he reported Rubeus Hagrid for keeping Aragog after Myrtle Warren was killed, leading to Hagrid’s detention, expulsion, and the destruction of his wand despite insufficient evidence. The actual culprit was the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets, which Riddle had used to frame Hagrid. 79 124 125 126

A fragment of Riddle’s soul remained in his diary. It could communicate with readers and manipulate them toward opening the Chamber of Secrets; it also retained knowledge of the Basilisk and the Chamber’s entrance. 79 94

Defeat and Imprisonment

After Quirrell’s death, Voldemort emerged from his body as a weakened black mist with red eyes. He attempted to recruit Brook Lott by offering wealth, status, and power, but Brook rejected him and left him sealed inside an isolated space. 65

Brook later learned that Voldemort’s Horcruxes made permanent destruction difficult. On Hassen Bones’ advice, he chose to control Voldemort instead of killing him, intending to use the Dark Lord’s influence over Death Eaters and pure-blood families. 72

Basilisk Vessel and Return to Human Form

Brook forcibly transferred Voldemort’s soul into the corpse of Slytherin’s Basilisk and bound him with the Tightening Curse. Voldemort submitted after the curse’s torture, though he continued seeking a way to escape Brook’s control. 96

Using powdered Philosopher’s Stone, Nagini’s cursed blood, and prepared Polyjuice essence, Brook restored Voldemort to a human-shaped body. The new form had paper-pale skin, scarlet snake eyes, a flat serpent-like nose, and waist-length black hair. 102 104

Japanese Campaign

Voldemort established a base in Japan with Death Eaters, Dementors, and Brook’s support. He infiltrated the Japanese Emperor’s residence in snake form, captured Emperor Naruto, and helped turn him into a puppet ruler through soul manipulation. 116 117 162

He negotiated a five-year agreement with Cornelius Fudge: Voldemort, his Death Eaters, and Dementors would not enter Britain, while Fudge could claim political credit for suppressing him and recover Death Eater assets. 120

As the conflict expanded, Voldemort employed Dementors, Death Eaters, Imperius-controlled civilians, magical creatures, and Muggle weaponry against Japan’s Cabinet Faction and foreign allied forces. He eventually gained the title “Savior God Lord” after secretly protecting civilians during a major eruption, while continuing plans to conquer Japan and Australia. 174 297 323 324

Changing Bodies and Priorities

After briefly possessing Eula’s body, Voldemort’s soul was transferred into a Veela body. This gave her a fully feminine appearance and mannerisms, accompanied by a growing interest in clothing, cosmetics, cooking, and domestic life. 334 436 437

Her long pursuit of domination gradually weakened after becoming close to Eula. Voldemort abandoned a proposed unicorn body despite its strategic value, instead requesting the body of a Veela; she later admitted that power and dominion no longer seemed as meaningful as before. 331 333

During the conflict with Dumbledore, Voldemort instinctively shielded Eula from a Killing Curse. A blood-red barrier reflected the spell, heavily injuring Dumbledore despite being weakened by Voldemort’s incomplete soul. 329

Brook eventually removed the Tightening Curse and declared Voldemort his friend, ending the explicit magical restraint that had governed their alliance. 452

Appearance

Voldemort’s appearance changes repeatedly because of his fragmented soul and succession of vessels.

  • Black-mist state — A shadowy face formed from black mist, with two glowing red pupils. 65
  • Basilisk vessel — Occupied a thousand-year-old Basilisk corpse, gaining amber or golden eyes, extreme magical resistance, and the ability to assume a smaller green-snake form. 96 117
  • Reconstructed human body — Pale face, scarlet snake eyes, flat serpent-like nose, and long black hair. 104
  • Veela body — A feminine body with long hair and a markedly feminine presentation; she commonly wears purple, crimson, or cheongsam-style clothing. 334 436 478

Personality

Voldemort is proud, theatrical, and deeply attached to the title of Dark Lord. Even while weakened and imprisoned, he attempts to recruit Brook with promises of power and reacts with fury when treated as subordinate. 65 96

He is cruel in war, taking pleasure in fear, executions, and the suffering caused by Dementors. He commands followers through intimidation and has no hesitation using torture, magical coercion, or lethal force against enemies and dissenters. 116 117 297 323

His later behavior becomes increasingly contradictory. He remains dangerous and manipulative, but develops attachment to Eula, jealousy toward Nagini, and a conspicuously playful, flirtatious, domestic persona. 333 436 510

Abilities & Skills

Horcruxes and Soul Manipulation

Voldemort’s survival depends on divided soul fragments and his ability to inhabit or recover from external vessels.

  • Survived Quirrell’s death as an incorporeal black mist. 65
  • Maintained a conscious diary fragment capable of conversation, deception, and influencing others to release the Chamber’s monster. 79 94
  • Resided within Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem and identified the soul state within it. 202
  • Had Horcrux fragments connected to the diary, diadem, Hufflepuff’s cup, Marvolo Gaunt’s ring, Slytherin’s locket, Harry Potter, and Diana. 500 504
  • Created a new Horcrux using an ancestral ring and gifted it to Nagini as a stabilizing soul anchor. 510
  • His incomplete soul weakened the protective barrier that reflected Dumbledore’s Killing Curse. 329

Body Transfer and Transformation

Voldemort can possess or operate through non-human and reconstructed bodies.

  • Controlled Quirrell before emerging as black mist after Quirrell’s death. 64 65
  • Adapted to a Basilisk body after Brook forced his soul into it. 96
  • Transformed from a Basilisk-derived body into a human shape through a ritual potion. 104
  • Could shrink into a thumb-sized snake to infiltrate guarded locations. 116
  • Later transferred into a Veela body, changing both his appearance and outward behavior. 334

Dark Magic

Serpentine Magic and Reconnaissance

Voldemort has an exceptional connection with snakes and exploits them for combat and espionage.

  • Uses snake form for stealth infiltration. 117

Command and Psychological Warfare

Voldemort commands Death Eaters and Dementors as military assets.

  • Delegates battlefield roles to Bellatrix Lestrange and other Death Eaters. 116
  • Uses Dementors to exhaust forces through raids, hallucinations, soul-damaging kisses, and sleep deprivation. 323 324
  • Employs Imperius-controlled civilians and soldiers in suicide attacks. 324
  • Combined magical defenses with Muggle firearms and military infrastructure in ambushes and large-scale warfare. 134 174
