Background
Madara first appears as a young Uchiha dispatched to retrieve Uchiha Nanami, whose Mangekyo Sharingan made her strategically valuable to the clan. He argues that only the Uchiha can protect her, but Nanami rejects a clan culture that measures people by the worth of their eyes. Unable to persuade her, Madara withdraws. 68
Following Uchiha Tajima’s disappearance and death, Madara takes control of the Uchiha Clan. During the internal crisis surrounding Nanami and the destruction of Sharingan, he suppresses Tajima’s faction, takes possession of the Uchiha Gunbai, and purges hostile elements from the clan. He allows some invaders to escape so news of the destroyed Sharingan will spread. 104 105 133
As clan leader, Madara initially presents himself as a capable battlefield commander and opportunist. He recognizes the need for allies, considers cooperation with other clans, and even gathers Uchiha forces to aid the Hagoromo Clan before withdrawing once intelligence suggests the operation is untenable. 105 134
Appearance
In his youth, Madara is a long-haired black-haired ninja whose relaxed posture projects conspicuous confidence and arrogance. 68
In old age, he becomes severely emaciated and white-haired, wears a loose gray-black robe, relies on a cane, and is kept alive by a connection to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 236
- Long black hair during the clan-war era. 68
- Mangekyo Sharingan patterned from his Three Tomoe Sharingan. 121
- Later possesses the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, whose pattern combines his and Izuna’s eyes. 166
- Becomes physically frail and withered after awakening the Rinnegan too late in life. 236
Personality
Madara is intensely self-assured, proud, and dismissive of opponents he considers beneath him. He views Yuzhen’s threats as childish because he believes ordinary ninja cannot comprehend the world of the strong. 76 His confidence also leads him to underestimate Hashirama for much of their rivalry, mistaking Hashirama’s restraint for equality. 150 173
Despite his arrogance, he is deeply attached to his family. He personally seeks Nanami’s return, quietly protects her activities within the clan, worries about Orihime, and treats Izuna’s death as an unbearable personal loss. 68 100 158 Izuna’s death destabilizes him, turning his hostility toward Tobirama and Sasuke into indiscriminate resentment. 158
Madara’s conviction that only he understands the Ninja World makes him vulnerable to manipulation. He places faith in the altered ancestral stone tablet and later mistakes Black Zetsu for a fragment of his own consciousness, believing that his plan will create lasting peace. 181 236
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Madara’s Uchiha dōjutsu grants him formidable perception, genjutsu, and chakra control.
- Uses Mangekyo genjutsu to enforce absolute obedience. 99
- Possesses sensory abilities strong enough that White Zetsu assigned to watch him refuse to approach closely. 120
- Can activate Susanoo even after losing his eyes, using residual Rinnegan power to create a clone. 237
- His Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan can control the Nine-Tails. 166 181
Susanoo
Madara manifests Susanoo when conventional combat is insufficient.
- Activates Susanoo after Yuzhen’s invisible weapon nearly reaches his heart. 121
- Maintains Susanoo while confronting Hashirama and disregards Amaterasu flames during the confrontation. 122
- Later uses a larger Susanoo and ultimately manifests a Perfect Susanoo after recovering the Rinnegan. 172 272
Fire and Earth Release
Madara favors direct, destructive ninjutsu.
- His Fire Style is regarded as exceptional due to his Uchiha bloodline. 60
- Uses Earth Style to evade Yuzhen’s Great Ball Rasengan, though he admits it is not one of his stronger affinities. 121
- Uses Fire Style: Dustless Technique against Yuzhen after his revival. 273
Rinnegan Techniques
Madara’s late-life awakening of the Rinnegan gives him access to Six Paths-level tools, though his aging body initially prevents him from using them in direct combat.
- Summons and connects himself to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for life support. 236
- Creates Black Zetsu and several White Zetsu as agents for his plans. 236
- Uses Tengai Shinsei and Limbo: Border Jail during his final battle with Yuzhen. 273
- Limbo shadows can be sensed and destroyed by a sufficiently powerful Rinnegan user. 273
Wood Release
After his revival, Madara uses Hashirama-derived Wood Release.
- Creates a massive Sea of Trees to shield and reach the Tailed Beasts. 273
- Uses Flower Tree World Descending primarily as cover for his attempt to capture the Tailed Beasts. 273
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Uchiha Gunbai — Taken from Izuna after Tajima is overthrown. 104
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Sustains his elderly body through a tube connected to the back of his head. 236
- Cane — Used during his final years as his body weakens. 236
Relationships
- Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother and Madara’s closest emotional bond. Izuna’s death drives Madara into instability and leads him to take Izuna’s eyes for the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. 158 166
- Uchiha Orihime — Younger brother. Madara later recruits him through appeals to family, loss, and the possibility of reviving Nanami and Izuna. 76 239
- Uchiha Nanami — Uchiha relative whose safety Madara claims to prioritize; she rejects his clan-first reasoning and refuses to return. 68
- Uchiha Tajima — Father and former Uchiha Clan Leader. Madara assumes leadership after Tajima’s disappearance and death. 104 133
- Hashirama Senju — Lifelong rival. Madara considers Hashirama his equal for much of the clan-war era, but repeatedly fails to account for Hashirama’s greater strength. 133 173 181
- Tobirama Senju — Principal enemy after Izuna’s death. Madara eventually realizes Tobirama, rather than Hashirama, is the political threat that broke the Uchiha’s position. 158 174
- Yuzhen — Early adversary whose perceptiveness and political maneuvering repeatedly frustrate Madara. Yuzhen ultimately defeats him after his revival. 76 120 273
- Black Zetsu — Madara believes Black Zetsu is a fragment of his own consciousness and entrusts it with his plans; Black Zetsu instead manipulates him and his chosen pawns. 236 266
- Sasuke Uchiha — A future Uchiha whose warnings Madara rejects. After Izuna’s death, Madara irrationally treats Sasuke as partly responsible and later seeks to capture him alive. 133 158 167
Story Role / Major Arcs
Uchiha Clan Consolidation
Madara seeks Nanami’s return, protects her covert activities after she returns to Uchiha territory, and takes control of the clan following Tajima’s fall. His purge removes the old leadership faction and establishes him as the Uchiha’s effective leader. 68 100 104 105
Conflict with Firefly and the Senju
Madara investigates the Firefly Organization, confronts Yuzhen, and demonstrates overwhelming chakra and combat ability against Firefly ninja. His fight with Yuzhen and Tobirama escalates until Hashirama’s arrival forces the engagement to end. 73 120 121 122
Izuna’s Death and the Eternal Mangekyo
Tobirama kills Izuna with the Flying Thunder God Technique. Madara returns with Izuna’s body, becomes increasingly irrational, reads the ancestral stone tablet with his Mangekyo, and takes Izuna’s eyes to obtain the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. 158 166
Collapse of Uchiha Leadership
Madara’s refusal to adapt to the Senju Alliance, his killing of Kensuke, and his fixation on pursuing Sasuke cause Uchiha ninja to lose faith in him. The Uchiha ultimately surrender to the alliance, and Madara returns to find the clan village deserted. 167 168 172 173
Defection and False Death
After joining Konoha, Madara defects because he rejects the village system and believes himself uniquely capable of seeing the truth. He controls the Nine-Tails in a final challenge to Hashirama, is publicly believed killed, and retreats into secrecy after acquiring Hashirama’s power. 181 198
Moon Eye Plot
Near death, Madara awakens the Rinnegan, uses the Demonic Statue to extend his life, and creates Zetsu agents to act in his place. He later manipulates Orihime into assisting his plan and relies on Black Zetsu to manage his legacy. 236 239
Revival and Final Death
Madara’s planned revival fails to restore him as a Six Paths being, but he returns through Jigen’s reconstructed body and reclaims his Rinnegan. Learning that Black Zetsu manipulated him breaks his composure, yet he still attempts to seize the Tailed Beasts and Yuzhen’s chakra. Yuzhen destroys his Limbo shadows and prevents his escape before Kaguya’s Bone Spear pierces and disintegrates him. 271 272 273
