Background / History
Warring States Era
The Uchiha were a prominent ninja clan recognized by their Fan of Fire crest and Sharingan. Their field ninjas wore long black outer coats bearing the symbol, often without forehead protectors. 30 Alongside combat missions, the clan maintained a sugar trade as a regular source of income. 35
The clan was a longstanding enemy of the Senju. Its internal culture valued powerful Sharingan users highly, and rare ocular abilities could become matters of confinement, secrecy, and political struggle. A Uchiha known as Nameless was secretly imprisoned because their Sharingan could mark and mentally control anyone within its visual range. 97 98
Nanami's Departure and the Civil Strife
Uchiha Nanami left the clan and joined the Firefly Organization after rejecting Uchiha practices and prioritizing her own beliefs over clan loyalty. 68 72 She later returned to help free Nameless, with Yuzhen creating diversions and opening a path out of the Uchiha settlement. 102 104
During the escape, Uchiha Tajima intercepted Nanami and Nameless, but Madara intervened and allowed Nameless to leave. He then condemned the elders' conduct. 104 Madara subsequently purged Tajima's faction and consolidated power within the clan. 105
Madara's Leadership
Following Tajima's disappearance and death, Madara became the Uchiha's de facto Clan Leader. 133 198 His leadership initially restored the clan's confidence, but his refusal to accept Senju leadership and his increasingly personal war against Hashirama drove a divide within the Uchiha. 134 152
Tobirama Senju killed Izuna Uchiha with the Flying Thunder God Technique, breaking the clan's military balance against the Senju. 158 Madara transplanted Izuna's eyes and awakened the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, but the clan was increasingly isolated as the Senju built a multi-clan alliance. 166
Several Uchiha ultimately surrendered to the Senju rather than continue following Madara, citing disillusionment with his leadership and a refusal to fight fellow Uchiha. 168 Tobirama relocated the clan under cover of night, leaving Madara to return to an abandoned Uchiha settlement and a letter condemning his leadership. 173
Konoha Era
The Uchiha joined Konohagakure later than the other major clans and therefore did not receive the special standing held by the village's earliest members. 179 Madara later betrayed Konoha; although he was publicly believed to have been killed by Hashirama, he continued operating in secret. 198
In the Third Hokage's era, Konoha instituted a Sharingan Registration System requiring the Uchiha to report awakenings, evolutions, special abilities, and combat use of their eyes. 248 This created further friction between the clan and the village.
A radical Uchiha faction eventually planned rebellion and the creation of a new ninja village. 256 Itachi Uchiha infiltrated and eliminated the faction to prevent a wider Uchiha–Konoha conflict, then became an S-rank rogue ninja publicly blamed for the killings. 257 258 Afterward, the Fourth Hokage narrowed the registration requirement to Mangekyo Sharingan alone, apologized to the clan, and completed a closer reintegration of the Uchiha into Konoha. 258
Appearance
In the Warring States period, identifiable Uchiha ninjas wore long black outer coats marked with the clan's Fan of Fire crest. 30
- Fan of Fire crest — displayed on the back of the clan's black outer coats. 30
- Scarlet Sharingan — activated eyes may display tomoe or more complex Mangekyo patterns. 39 44
- Bare foreheads — early Uchiha field ninjas were noted for not wearing forehead protectors. 30
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan's defining dōjutsu. Even the Three-Tomoe form can quickly overwhelm opponents through direct eye contact and mental manipulation. 44
- Can place targets under Genjutsu and force them to reveal intelligence. 42 44
- Can alter or erase the traces of Genjutsu after interrogation, allowing targets to resume normal activity without immediate suspicion. 44
- Creates strong battlefield pressure; opponents are advised to use a two-person distraction-and-ambush approach rather than face it directly. 44
- Not every Uchiha awakens the Sharingan, even during wartime. 173
Mangekyo Sharingan
Mangekyo Sharingan are exceptionally rare within the clan and possess Eye Power far beyond ordinary Sharingan. 33 Their powers vary by user, while their repeated use carries severe physical and mental costs. 32 33 158
- Uchiha Nanami — uses a space-time ability for escape and possesses Umojishikashu, which can traverse timelines but traps her in a painful void. 33 72
- Uchiha Tajima — can perceive several seconds into the future, allowing him to evade otherwise lethal attacks. 114
- Nameless / Lan — reportedly marks anyone within the Sharingan's visual range, turning affected targets into mentally and physically controlled puppets. 97
- Madara Uchiha — uses Mangekyo Genjutsu to enforce commands and control subordinates absolutely. 99
- Sasuke Uchiha — manifests Susanoo and continues fighting after the strain of its use leaves him nearly blind. 158
Fire Style
Uchiha combatants employ advanced Fire Style techniques alongside their ocular abilities.
- Uchiha Tajima uses the Phoenix Sage Fire Technique against Yuzhen's clones. 114
- Uchiha Izuna uses Fire Style: Song of the Fire Dragon while attempting to restrain Tobirama Senju. 158
- Fire Style was sufficiently associated with the clan that an intruder's use of it contributed to suspicions of an internal Uchiha mole. 103
Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan
The Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is obtained through the transplantation of a close relative's Mangekyo eyes. Madara acquired it by taking Izuna's eyes after his death. 158 166
- Provides Madara with seemingly inexhaustible Eye Power. 166
- Allows him to control the Nine-Tails with relative ease. 166
- Represents a further stage beyond ordinary Mangekyo power. 158 166
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai — Uchiha Tajima passed this fan-shaped ninja tool to Madara. It can reflect ninjutsu and increase the wielder's combat strength. 106

- Uchiha Fugaku — Later Clan Leader whose indecision failed to resolve the radical faction's rebellion plans. 256
- Uchiha Itachi — Fugaku's son, Anbu ninja, and radical-faction infiltrator who eliminated the extremists to prevent a broader conflict. 256 257
- Uchiha Shisui — Itachi's close friend and a Mangekyo user whose death was publicly attributed to Itachi. 257 258
