Background

Tanjiro comes from the Kamado family and closely resembles his ancestor Tanjiki. Through dreams, he experiences Tanjiki's memories and witnesses Yoriichi and Yuko's connection to his ancestors 56 168.

After returning from Grandpa Saburo's home, Tanjiro finds Nezuko wounded outside their house and the rest of his family missing. He chooses to carry Nezuko down the mountain and save her first, even before learning what happened to the others 60. Yuko had secretly relocated the Kamado family, allowing Tanjiro and Nezuko to reunite safely with Kie, Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru, and Rokuta 62.

He apprentices under Sakonji Urokodaki at Mount Sagiri. Although Water Breathing suits his calm temperament, Yuko recognizes that Sun Breathing is more compatible with him and becomes an additional mentor during his training 69 71.

Personality

Tanjiro is compassionate without being indecisive. He can grieve for demons and recognize their suffering while remaining resolved to kill them when necessary 26. His kindness makes him popular among townspeople and fellow Corps members alike, though he refuses to claim sole credit for the defeat of Muzan 55 441.

He is exceptionally determined under pressure. He persists through painful breathing training, accepts the responsibility of protecting Nezuko, and keeps fighting even when facing opponents vastly beyond his strength 62 70 137 343. This empathy also extends to his comrades: he helps Giyu confront his guilt over Sabito and decide to train again 249.
