Tang Sanzang left Ciyun Temple in Jinping Prefecture with his three disciples, Sun Wukong and the others. After reaching the prefectural governor's residence and exchanging their Pass Document, they continued on their journey.
"Wukong, this temple isn't large or small, yet it is quite solemn. It must be the Bujin Zen Temple mentioned by the abbot of Ciyun Temple, where the Buddha Ancestor once preached!"
"As a monk traveling west to obtain the scriptures, how could I pass a temple without paying my respects?"
According to the abbot of Ciyun Temple, several hundred li west of here stood a Bujin Zen Temple,
a place where Ji Dugu the Elder had purchased a garden from Prince Jeta to offer to the Buddha.
As a Buddhist disciple, how could Tang Sanzang pass by without paying his respects? Thus, they stopped there for a day.
Suddenly, the mountain gate of Bujin Zen Temple swung wide open. Seeing Tang Sanzang's radiant appearance, the temple's abbot pressed his palms together and asked:
"Amitabha!"
"Are you the Holy Monk who came from the Eastern Tang Dynasty?"
Tang Sanzang, dressed in the Brocade Kasaya and leaning on the Nine-Ringed Monk's Staff, approached at an unhurried pace. His figure was upright, and he looked every inch a virtuous eminent monk.
"That is correct!"
"I am Tang Sanzang, a monk traveling from the Eastern Tang Dynasty to the Western Heaven to obtain the scriptures. Since I happened to pass by this precious temple, I came especially to pay my respects!"
When word spread that an eminent monk from the Eastern Tang Dynasty had arrived, everyone in the temple came to take a look, whether they were permanent residents, visiting monks, elders, or young novices.
