Background / History

Sun Wukong originated from the mysterious stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain. Bai Ze later explained that he was formed from a Five-Colored Stone left over from Nuwa's mending of heaven, which Shi Yu and Nuwa had refined together. He was also noted to possess a Great Witch True Body. 376 390 396

After witnessing the deaths of his descendants, the Stone Monkey sought the Dao and immortality to escape life and death. Yang Jian brought him to Old Ancestor Bodhi, who accepted him as a disciple and gave him the name Sun Wukong. 390 391

At Spiritual Terrace Square Inch Mountain, Wukong learned alongside Nezha, Yang Jiao, Yang Jian, and Ao Bing. His senior brothers taught him the foundations of Manifesting Heaven and Earth, while Bodhi privately imparted the Seventy-two Transformations, Great Celestial Immortal Art, and Somersault Cloud after Wukong understood his master's nighttime hint. 391

Within several years, he had mastered the Seventy-two Transformations and made initial progress in the Great Grade Heavenly Immortal Art and Eight-Nine Arcane Art. He repeatedly sparred with Yang Jian, though his lack of a suitable weapon left him at a disadvantage. 392

Sun Wukong is a monkey-faced cultivator with golden eyes, usually depicted in golden battle attire and carrying his staff. He can manifest an immense giant-ape Dharma Body in combat. 392 474

Wukong is energetic, proud, and intensely eager to prove himself. Early in his cultivation, he believed his own divine abilities to be immense; Bai Ze's explanation of the Primordial World's powerful figures left him recognizing how little he knew. 395 396

He is deeply attached to Shi Yu/Bodhi and reacts fiercely to anyone he believes threatens his master. This loyalty helped lead him to disrupt the Ullambana Festival at Spiritual Mountain. 397 401

Although impulsive and fond of showing off, Wukong becomes increasingly shrewd. He exposes the false king of Wuji Kingdom, employs borrowed treasures tactically against Sai Tai Sui, and recognizes the political arrangement behind many tribulations on the western journey. 457 524 485

Wukong can also resolve conflict without force when necessary. He explained the misunderstanding with Jiu Ling Yuan Sheng rather than immediately escalating their confrontation. 579

Heavenly Court Appointment

After Bai Ze educated him on the Primordial World's hierarchy and revealed Bodhi's connection to Great Emperor Ziwei, Tai Bai Jin Xing recruited Wukong to the Heavenly Court as Bimawen, keeper of the Imperial Horse Stable. He initially took pride in commanding the heavenly horses before learning that the post carried no rank. 396 397

Havoc at Spiritual Mountain and Imprisonment

At the Ullambana Festival, Wukong attacked Guardian Vajras, Arhats, and Bodhisattvas, using the Ruyi Jingu Bang and hair-clone techniques to devastate Spiritual Mountain. Buddha Tathagata eventually suppressed him beneath Five Finger Mountain, but Shi Yu imposed a sentence of 500 days rather than Tathagata's demanded 500 years. 401 402

While imprisoned, Jiang Ziya taught him scriptures. Shi Yu later revealed his identity to Wukong, formally enfeoffed him as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and gave him the title's waist token. 406

Journey to the West

Wukong was released to meet Tang Sanzang and join the western pilgrimage. He fought and outwitted numerous monsters, including the Green Lion of Wuji Kingdom, Sai Tai Sui of Kirin Mountain, and the demons occupying Lion Camel Country. 411 457 524 551

His role gradually expanded beyond fighting. He healed the King of Zhu Zi Kingdom, used diplomacy with Jiu Ling Yuan Sheng, and began recognizing that many pilgrimage tribulations were political conflicts between Eastern Xuanmen and Western Buddhism. 522 579 485

Conflict with the Six-Eared Macaque

The Six-Eared Macaque impersonated Wukong as part of a Buddhist plot to replace him. Wukong countered by retrieving the Chaos Bell, confronting the impostor at Spiritual Mountain, and refusing to submit to Buddha Tathagata's arrangements. 501 502

The confrontation ended after Zhunti accepted Wukong's demand to take the Six-Eared Macaque, while Wukong agreed to continue the Journey to the West. 503

Victorious Fighting Buddha and Quasi-Saint

After completing the Journey to the West and receiving its merit, Wukong was named Victorious Fighting Buddha and reached peak Grand Unity Golden Immortal. 593

He later absorbed the Six-Eared Macaque's remnant origin and entered the Quasi-Saint realm, becoming one of the strongest members of Tang Sanzang's circle. 619 651

Later Activities

Following the pilgrimage, Wukong remains connected to the Heavenly Court and the emerging Eastern Buddhist faction. He assists Tang Sanzang's new Buddhist movement and accompanies Maitreya during the establishment of a temple in Suzhou and Hangzhou. 601 685 686
