Background
Tang Sanzang was born Chen Xuanzang in Chang'an and became a monk at Hongfu Temple in his youth. He identifies himself foremost as a monk of the Eastern Tang Dynasty, despite later revelations concerning his origin. 592
He is a reincarnation and split soul of Golden Cicada, Buddha Tathagata's disciple. His previous nine virtuous lifetimes were likewise reincarnations of Golden Cicada's Primordial Spirit, and the planned purpose of his pilgrimage was for Golden Cicada to reclaim him after the True Sutras were obtained. 471
Before leaving for the West, Tang Sanzang becomes sworn brothers with Emperor Li Shimin. Li equips him with a khadga, brocade kasaya, purple-gold alms bowl, and imperial white horse, then entrusts him with the scripture mission. 410
Appearance
Tang Sanzang is a bald monk with a fair, plump appearance and a composed, dignified bearing. He is frequently recognized as a venerable high monk even before revealing his identity. 488 583
- Usually wears a brocade kasaya and Pilou Hat. 410 601
- Carries a Nine-Ringed Monk's Staff, whose rings audibly chime when he walks. 556
- Is described as fair-skinned, plump, and well-presented. 488 565
- Projects formal composure even while captured or surrounded by hostile beings. 477 480
Personality
Tang Sanzang begins the journey cautious and deeply attached to his homeland. He initially attempts to avoid Five Finger Mountain after hearing of Sun Wukong's violence, and looks back toward Great Tang every few steps when first departing west. 410 411
His experiences gradually make him more discerning. After repeatedly encountering demons, false Buddhas, and corrupt Buddhist figures, he concludes that Buddhist scriptures may contain profound principles even when members of the Buddhist Gate act improperly. He also reads Daoist teachings, arguing that truth beneficial to all beings should not be restricted by a divide between Xuanmen and Buddhism. 555
Tang Sanzang is compassionate but not passive. He seeks the motive behind the Six-Eared Macaque's impersonation before deciding its fate, offers to help Kui Mulang reconcile with Baihuaxiu, and attempts to mediate conflict between Maitreya and Rulai. 499 440 689
After learning he may be consumed by Golden Cicada, he develops a fierce sense of selfhood. He accepts that strength determines survival, willingly endures the Tight-Fillet Spell to temper his Buddhist heart, and ultimately refuses to surrender either his merit or identity. 471 474 475 592
